Well, my calculus teacher said there was a deficit of math tutors/readers who could teach calculus, so he said that if I signed up, he'd give me a recommendation. The pay is decent, I guess, fixed at $9/hr. I'm not allowed to surf the net or anything while tutoring, though. I'd probably get off with reading Calculus on Manifolds, I think.
I don't know about this entire job thing though. It's not as though my schedule is busy, but jobs seems scary. I've done Japanese tutoring before, but it was voluntary and not community service. How does this entire "job" thing work out? How much does a job take out of you? |

I have a part time job washing dishes for 6.50 an hour, and I don't mind it.
And that seems like good pay. If I had the capabilities for that job, I'd take it. Maybe... what would your schedule be like? ____________________ |

It probably won't take that much out of your schedule. I'd say do it... but not to brag I was getting paid a lot more than $9 an hour for tutoring at one point. But that was through the university so I didn't feel guilty about it. When I freelanced I charged about $10 an hour though.
(freelancing is of course also harder to maintain as a steady source of income so if you can get a steady tutoring job I'd say go for it. This assumes you can handle people being dumb at math and can explain things in ways that they'll eventually understand.) ____________________ Zelda Hacking Forum hobbies: delectatio morosa |

As long as you have patience and somewhat decent social skills (no fears) I'd say take it--it's an easy job, which means it won't stress you out--especially if jobs tend to scare you--and could be easy bonus points on later resumes. Not to mention $9/hr isn't horrible for an easy job (I'm working in the Financial Aid department filing papers and such at only $7.75/hr).
Try it out at least. |

Posted by GuyPerfect That's kind of what I'm worried about. The squalor is more intimidating than the difficulty. How does one tutor an egocentric crowd such as this one? I saw it just as much if not more at UCSD--where the delta-epsilon definition of a limit is not taught because it's "too hard." :\ |

Posted by SamuraiX Depends. Obviously, it will take the minimum of the number of hours you are working. Think about this though; are you gonna have to prepare lessons for students? Will you have to help tutor your students after your hours in order to ensure their understand of the topic? It's when you put in extra hours past your basic paid hours that a job really starts to take its toll. |
