I live in the Detroit area, Michigan, USA. A lot of you probably know the reputation this place has. There isn't exactly a murder every five minutes unless you're in the ghetto (defined as practically the entire city of Detroit), but it still has plenty of problems.
- No economy. The auto industry is leaving in droves and no other industry is picking up the slack, except maybe the McMansion constructing industry as people move farther and farther away from Detroit.
- Horrendous public transportation. I prefer not to drive and worry about the added expense of a car. That's really tough around here because buses only come once an hour and not in the evenings or on Sundays, and the routes are usually about three miles apart and very few of them go past around 15 Mile Road (where half the people live these days).
- Lots of missing, inconsistent, dead-ending, and curb-interrupted sidewalks, making biking a challenge.
- Extreme weather. I don't mind seasons, but I could do without 100-degree heat in the summer and -20 wind chills in the winter. At least there are no hurricanes or earthquakes though.
- Racism everywhere. Almost 100% of White parents in suburbs with a significant Black population will send their children to private schools so they they will only have to go to school with other White people. Southfield, for instance, is about 35% white and 55% black, but the schools are close to 0% white from what I can tell.
- No urban area, really. The downtown is this pathetically tiny place surrounded by a huge ghetto of your worst nightmares. There are tall buildings in some of the suburbs, but they're surrounded by obscenely huge parking lots, large forests, and 8-12 lane highways, and they're almost all commercial and not residential. Not the urban life I've dreamed of.
- Big, masculine vehicles. Less than half of the vehicles are cars, most of them are big trucks, SUVs, and Hummers.
- Intolerance for anyone who is not pursuing the white-bread Midwestern suburban lifestyle.
- The radio stations around here suck unless you like ghetto crunk or the same 5 Motown songs played all day.

There are only a few good aspects:
- It is about 4.5 million people in the metro area, so there are a lot of businesses and places to go. I hate small towns because there's nothing around and all the restaurants are country bars full of rednecks.
- It's kinda cool having house numbers way up in the five-digit range. A typical address in the Detroit area might be 24725, whereas most cities have numbers like 17.
- It may suck, but it's infinity times better than the town I grew up in. Lexington was pathetically tiny, and almost entirely rednecks and a few summer cottage people. The nearest grocery store or decent restaurant or fast food place (except McDonald's) was 20 miles away in Port Huron. It was 100% White Christian Republicans who hate everyone. I still don't understand what my parents SEE in that place.

Go live in Kansas or somewhere in the middle of Tornado Alley for a few years and say that again. Michigan's weather was anything but "extreme" and I lived there for a good 5 full years. I don't even consider Kansas's weather as all that extreme either, but I view Michigan's weather as incredibly mild.

Anyway, I live near Boston, closer to Woburn actually. I actually like a lot of things about where I live, particularly the people who are incredibly nice, the fact that it's liberal (yes, that really does kind of matter to me), and the weather is mild... plus I live near the ocean, which is awesome. On the downside traffic is terrible and it's a little crowded. Not that I mind living somewhere with a lot of people but crowdedness = more traffic = more suck. But that's about it, really.

South Florida. No one can drive properly here (since everyone that lives/visits here has their own driving style), half cannot speak English and they get mad at you for not understanding them, but at least it doesn't get cold here, and if it does, its only for about a week (like last week when it got down into the low 40's).

I know. It got 100F and -20F commonly in Kansas where I lived, and I don't honestly remember it getting below 0, or hell, hardly below 10 in Michigan, and it rarely got above 95 or so even in the middle of summer.

But, I don't know, maybe you've lived there longer and have more experience I know storm-wise it's less extreme, and to be honest, I don't consider the occasional (or even persistent) hot days or cold days to be that extreme...

I live in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York. I used to live in the Albany area for most of my life, until January 2006.

Some good things are the lack of huge SUVs, and there is an actual downtown. Television and radio are good in my area, and I can even get some NYC radio stations because I'm only ~50 miles from NYC

One bad thing is missing most of my Albany friends

Well, I did live right along Lake Horun for a while, which tended to be colder, and -20 was referring to wind chills.

I live in Nebraska... our weather is known for being 70 degrees and beautiful one day and then a quick shift to 20 degrees and snowing the next... especially in the fall and spring.

I live in Phoenix Arizona. Lived here for 15 years...I think. The hottest I've seen it get here is 128º F. The coldest was about 60º F. When you are used to hot weather, 60 degrees is FREEZING!!!

It's weird, I went north one weekend, and it was about 30 degrees; I wasn't cold at all.

I live in Bergen, Norway. It's population is about 240 000, and it's the biggest town I've ever lived in.

And what's to say? The town itself is nice enough, actually, it's probably one of the better looking places in Norway. And the temperatures aren't all that cold (from what I have been used to.) But that doesn't help much when it rains like hell.

From my perspective, being used to live in a town of 5000 people, this is much better, as I actually get to attend some cool concerts (maybe not for everyone, though.), and there are just more places to go, and such. Yeah, I like it.

Though I wish I could live closer to the downtown area, but then again, it works, and it's cheap..

(View of downtown area from one of the surrounding mountains.)

It's nicest during summer, definately.

I live in State College, Pennsylvania, the town of the main Penn State University campus.

Pros

We're less than a mile from Ogre's work place and about four miles from mine. He bikes year round. I'll be biking again when the weather is nicer, as I use a trail that isn't maintained during the winter, and I don't like the alternative route (a winding road with lots of traffic and nearly no shoulder).

Nifty unique restaurants, such as Otto's Pub and Brewery.

We got a great deal on a house downtown, where real estate values have been going up. There's no new development of single-family housing this close to town (they don't have room for it), and we were lucky enough to find an affordable house in good condition five years ago. It's small, but it's perfect for two people and two cats, and we're increasing its value by putting in hardwood and tile flooring. So we're happy to live here now, and we'll easily be able to sell and recoup our money if/when we move.

My awesome gym (cheap, friendly, has plenty of free weights and good elliptical machines, uncrowded if you go at night) is within walking distance.

Pennsylvania is full of odd small towns and bizarre abandoned places. I've been to the Panther Valley strip mine and the abandoned turnpike tunnels near Breezewood (sorry, no pictures yet).

Cons

This town is whitebread central. Homogeneous populations get boring.

Negative windchill and dangerous driving conditions. Cold weather doesn't generally bother me that much, but I hate icy winds. At least this winter hasn't been that bad, but last week's storm was poop. And at least I got to work from home because the roads were unsafe.

The anal-retentive borough fines you if your grass is more than 6 inches high. They're not as bad as a homeowners' association, but meh.

Having to plan activities around university events. Case in point: home football weekends, when State College becomes the third largest town in the state because of a 100,000+ person influx. This wouldn't be as annoying if the town actually had the infrastructure and amenities to handle all those people. It doesn't, so restaurants all over the place tend to be packed and traffic tends to suck. I realize that major cities get like this all the time, but I hate giant crowds and long waits and major inconvenience without some truly worthwhile end result, so I tend to hibernate on game day.

I live in Winchester, Virginia. Well, just outside the city itself, I think...

Pros:

Close to where I work.

Everything we need is nearby.

Winter weather tends to be pretty good. I like snow and rain though.

Cons:

City planning? What city planning? Traffic issues are really bad just about every afternoon, especially on Friday, and through a few sections there's a stop light every, oh, I'd estimate 50 feet.

Summers suck, but that's probably just my lungs talking. Anything warmer than 80 bothers me. =/

It's a pretty average place, nothing too great and nothing too terrible.

College Station, TX. Aka Assimilation Station.

Be hardcore Aggie or GTFO. Diversity? What's that? Well, since it IS a college town, you're gonna have a few diverse faces, but the locals are pretty much Conservative Country Christians who believe tradition is the most important part of being alive. And what is that tradition? Drinking at country-western bars, sticking pro-life slogans to the bumpers of your jacked-up trucks, and burning huge piles of wood in a display of senseless hatred for UT (who, by the way, doesn't even care about the so-called rivalry).

Needless to say, I don't belong here. I've met a grand total of TWO people who I have much in common with in the 12 years I've been here. I'm very glad this is my last year here. With any luck, I'll be shacked up in Orlando by 2008.

What's GOOD about it? Plenty of stores you'd find in a REAL city, and some good restaurants (Tx Roadhouse FTW). One bar comes to mind which offers dollar pints and pool.
But if you're a member of the Aggie cult..err TRADITION.. then everything about the town is good.

Rome, Georgia for me.

Pros:
-I live near relatives.
-Lots of trees around.
-Nice weather.
-Plenty of animals in the wild, especially deer and squirrels.
-Nice, calm place.
-Diverse cultures.

Cons:
-No snow whatsoever. We rarely get it down here.
-Not many good jobs around here.
-Games are generally only sold here about 2 days after their release dates.
-Too many people who like to hunt and fish.
-TOO MUCH SPANISH!

Those are MY pros and cons. Too much Spanish is a con for me because I barely understand it. XD

I live in Salinas, California. While there's tons of good, there's even more bad.

Pros:
-Not even a mile away is a store-hoard. Target, Circuit City, and tons of other stores in the same area.
-Salinas is considered the "Salad Bowl of the World"; over 80% of the lettuce grown in the United States is grown in the Salinas Valley. Nice to know we have fruits and vegetables in the case of an emergency.
-Weather is generally nice, but sometimes rainy. I like the rain, so I don't really have problems. Except when it's really cold...

Cons:
-Racism is all over the place. A lot of people don't express racism here, but you can tell there is some.
-Really bad voilent crime rate. Salinas also has many gang members.
-There's so much garbage everywhere, you'd think it was a city-based dumpster.
- 90% of adults can't drive well. 90% of adults are also rude.

My city has tons of great stuff to do, but they're spread in the strangest places. In addition, you better watch out; one of these days, you may get stabbed or shot.

Orange county, California.

Remember that show, The OC?

Yeah.

But that's the worst part. The people are rude, rich, and stuck up. A majority of the people around here are extremely wealthy, and then there are the people that don't have any money. We pretty much lack a middle class.
Everything here is expensive too, because most people around here don't mind wasting their money. But I think my least favorite part of living here is how crowded it is. The area recently converted thousands of acres of free space into neighborhoods and shops, which absolutely flooded the area with new people. The roads that were here before the expansion are too small, so construction on every single road has been in progress to make them wider. No matter where you go, no matter what time, there is going to be traffic. There's going to be crowds. There's going to be too many damn people. My high school alone has nearly 4,000 kids, and we're just one of MANY high schools in the area. Heck, they've bought land for 10 new elementary schools in preparation for the miniature baby boom we're going to experience, because of all the new families moving in.

It is a really really nice area, though. Third safest city in the United States. Beautiful weather all year round. Whatever store, restaurant, or entertainment you're looking for, you'll find it nearby. Most likely, you'll find three or four of what you're looking for nearby. ;D This place is reaaalllyy developed. And I've lived here for my entire life, so it feels like home.

Good:
- Plenty of places to go if you're looking to buy shit.
- Rather quiet in my area
- No severe weather (El Nino was probably the worst in a long time, and that was ten years ago; the very rare t-storm and occasional bad wind do hit)

Bad:
- No weather at all. 99% of days are "sunny" or "partly cloudly" at worst. Not having any weather is actually really goddamn boring, since you get no snow or rain, except once in every few years (that lasts for five minutes ) and once a month, on average.
- Really fucking hot. 120 in summer is death.
- Henderslum is across the street (Boulder Hwy. divides us). It's a riot because they're building "Major Shopping Center" (as in Major St.) in it, right in the worst part of town... what a joke.
- The people here drive like total idiots. Even worse in the sense that, since this place is a tourist trap, everyone on the roads is usually from somewhere else.
- There's nothing to do here unless you're over 21, and even then only if you like throwing your money into Craps (ha ha). There's no arcades, Wet'n'Wild closed down a few years ago ("See you in 2006" my ass), and so on...
- There's porn "newspaper stand" type things (insert quarter, take magizine) all fucking over the place. Not the area you want to raise a kid.
- SouthwestAss and NevadaPower rip everyone off. "Don't worry, your power is only going up 9% this year, which is less than the 25% we were considering last year! " ARGH

I hate living here. I hate living here. I hate living here.
