BootSkin app for those who don't want to muck about in their kernel. The .bootskin files it uses are really .zip, btw.

I have used that before. My little brother tried it too but it didn´t work on his computer. Same OS too.

Dunno if I should take the chance.

Well, it works on Chief's box. Not on Tenshi's though. He uses Vista.

Vista. That explains why it doesn´t work on THAT machine, though. People should wait until Vista becomes more stable.

Humanity is likely to extinguish itself in a global thermonuclear war before that happens.

Yeah, and my XP regularly magically reboots itself while running a generic OpenGL based screensaver.

I'm using Linux so my bootup is pretty bland. First, there's the menu where I choose between Windows XP and Linux. Just text mode with a blue rectangle for the menu and grey text on the screen and black background. The Windows one has just the standard XP Home screen, nothing special. If I choose Linux, I just get some more grey and black text about the computer loading things and checking stuff. After a few seconds, the nvidia logo flashes up for a second then disappears to a black and white pattern with a grey box in the moddle asking for username and password. I use xdm so it's very very minimal looking. That's about it.

Bootscreen?

What's that?

I don't see any reasons changing my bootscreen. I see it so rarely it's not worth it.

I kinda agree with that.

But I won't change it since I would have to stuff a widescreen display into a 640x480 area? Urgh. Sounds foul, I'll have wide pixels. D:
640x480 != 1440x900

Heheh. Bootskin uses bmp files. Convert those to something net-friendly.

I use it

Of course, Norton caused my computer to BSOD the first time I tried to boot it after setting up Bootskin, and I haven't rebooted since resetting the bootscreen to my custom one again.

Eh, it's a Tie-in bootscreen for a Hacker Evolution Mod I'm making.

Also, Win95/8/8SE Boot screens are a higher resolution than WinXP screens, WTF?!

I came across bootskin because I torrented some Hacking Windows XP pdf file. Most of its advice and tips aren't so useful, but I also haven't finished with it. There's also a similar program to customize your logon screen (made by the same company, even). It's called LogonStudio.

Bootscreen:

Logon screen:

(That's the preview that came with it, so of course the user is generic)

Edit: Fixed the URLs

Default Windows eXPloder bootscreen.

For some dumb reason I stole someone's Jesus Edition once. It never worked.

Mine is a giant wall of text with a bunch of diagnostic and status output. Sadly, I saw it recently.

My bootscreen says "Windows Vista" sometimes, but it mostly says "Windows XP" I knew I shouldn't have installed that damn Vista-esque theme... But the actual program windows and task bar look awesome, though I still wish I could get my dvd copy of vista home basic to install on my computer... (10 GB HD, 256 K SRAM, PIII ~400 MHz POS Dell.) I couldn't even try to install it because my PC doesn't have a DVD drive. But I doubt it would fit on my HD. And if it could, my specs suck too much to run it probably
