They finally made one. Interesting.

Damn, it's about time they made one of these. I always dreamed of something like this to get created. Eh, I'm just wondering how much it could cost, but thinking about the possibilities of the games that could get created with this sounds pretty nice.

I've heard of walking on treadmills while playing video games, but this is far superior.

Wow talk about virtual reality, the guy look like a realistic version of Mario.

...more seriously speaking, I can see the appliances for this. My only concern is if the human balance would be confused from it. I'm also trying to figure how the treadmill knows where to go.

Funny imaging people playing MMO's while being literally on a treadmill, heh.

The one thing I thought of was imagine having an extremely addicting game, and the extremely addicted gamer that gets little exercise. I mean, I know sometimes I can get into a game where I'd play for most of a day but something like this could really help people get their exercize.

Only problem I see with this right now is that it would have to be made quite a bit larger to deal with players leaping and stuff.
Other than that, awesome. I look forward to trying something like this out (This might also ensure that gamers who were left untouched by the DDR-induced Great De-Couchpotatoing of weeaboos finally get to do something for their health)

Weight would be an easy way of calculating a person's position, and is easily measured/detected with piezoelectric sensors. I'd guess for best results, they'd do a weighted sum at every position and make the target for the average to be directly over the center with a simple PID controller optimized to minimize jerk.
What makes *me* curious is how they managed to get it to scroll in *both* directions, and if it can scroll indefinitely in both directions or has boundaries.

Uh, it's a treadmill design, so I'm guessing it's indefinite.

I really doubt there's anything that needs to be done about leaping, as you're never making much horizontal progress even running at full speed, which means that if you run forward and jump, you're effectively doing the same thing as standing and jumping. Any sensor will pick up the difference, but you need not increase width as there's no real way to really screw up too badly. And if you leapt forward from a standing position, you'd spin the stuff but still stay in place, really.

In the future, crippled people cannot even play video games anymore.
Sorry for going there, but that is very true.

Eh, this is already true for Wii now.

I am surprised that someone actually made this. I had also pictured this when I thought of virtual reality, and also saw the inherent flaw of jumping, though from the article it seems they've taken that into account, I look forward to seeing applications of this, and more importantly, affordfable ones. But honestly, I see no way that this could become a home thing, it's just too big. I think VR games using this would be limited to arcades, maybe they'll come back after this thing comes into use.

Haha, just realized the pic was a link to the website. All I was coming up with was a spherical treadmill, which would take up way too much space to get the curvature small enough to be unnoticable.

Oh, and "VSD teamed with MTS Systems Corporation of Eden Prairie, MN, to secure an $8M US Army contract for second generation ODT development." It doesn't look like there's even any particularly high-tech equipment, just a really good design.
