I live near the station that gives this little town our broadband connection so I get about 90-95% of 24Mbit/s here.

Envy me.
We live near one of our ISP's pedestals. It's pretty much in our back yard.

And y helo thar matching user pic.

Hey, is that Felicia from Darkstalkers? I love the Darkstalkers series

terrible. think "dial-up" + "low-bandwidth" x .5 and you get my speed.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 796 kbps (99.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 526 kbps (65.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

I think it's more SpeakEasy's fault, as I've, on multiple occasions, gotten well over 200KB/s

(So much for that 6Mbps line or whatever we have, but again, the wiring here is crap)

Perhaps use speedtest.net?

I use TPTest for testing my connection. Probably because it comes from one of the most trustworthy government agencies in Sweden.

By using a speed tester, I found my dl speed at 3217kbps. And my ISP is TPG, which makes it even more remarkable .
But I get 3GB per month, which isnt that good.

3 GB a month? The hell?

I upload more than that monthly.

Download Speed: 1973 kbps (246.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 185 kbps (23.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

It goes higher than that.. but wireless network fluctuates a lot. In fact, how I don't lose connection with heavy interferance is beyond belief. Currently, I have a low signal.

291kB down, 66.8kB up. Sounds more normal.

Of course, the cable here has been weird (it was out earlier, I think the high wind knocked something into the cable line since it fizzed out and died about 5 hours ago), so we'll have to see...

I haven't measured my connection, but when I downloaded SuSE 10.2 yesterday from a good torrent it could sustain 100 kb/s down easily and peaked at about 200 kb/s at times. I can upload at between 40 and 50kb/s, but I limit it to 35 kb/s to maintain a reliable downstream. I've rarely had any downtime, it costs me £17.99 a month and I my data transfer is uncapped.

I don't think I get the sorts of speed I'd expect from an 8mb line, as streaming video can still be a bit difficult, but overall it's a good service for the money especially with the unmetered downloads.

Why does that image say kb/s when it displayed those values in kbps during the test?

Anyway, as you can probably see, I have a 2048kbps down/192kbps up (~230kB/s down, 24kB/s up) connection. It's okay. I'd love it if the upload speed was a bit higher though. Oh well, at least my ISP is pretty reliable, unlike my previous one, which often kicked me off the Internet for random reasons, or for no reasons at all. It also had that annoying 5 GB traffic limit, and I had to pay ridiculous amounts of money past that. Currently, I'm free of any time or traffic restriction.

When me and my parents are moving to another house in a few months, we're considering getting a 16000kbps down/1024kbps up connection, at the same ISP.

kb/s and kpbs are technically the same, although kB/s and kb/s are not.

(it always shows it in kbps or kb/s format, but you can configure the test itself to report kB/s when it's done.

Yes, it's stupidly confusing.)

Yep, the p means "per" and the slash is also short for "per". b is bits and B is bytes, and there are eight bits in a byte, so a kBps number would be 1/8th the number of kbps because, logically, if you can send x number of bits per second, you can send 1/8 that number of bytes.

I use DMax. It has this schedule where it usually disconnects around the same time of the day. Between 2 and 4 pm. It won't disconnect if it is a cloudy day mind you. Only when it is sunny.

Sadly it is the only ISP that I can afford so I really try to keep the bitching to a minimum.

I lose.

Yes, that really does cost me $24 a month plus all applicable taxes (which raises it to $29-ish).

This is why we need to supply our own internet and stop leeching it off an underwater cable.
