Hey people, you're supposed to be playing this game! You're making poor Ailure triple post! XD.

After a series of terrible mishaps ranging from rampant starvation to my computer overheating every time I got anywhere, I think I finally succeeded in my quest to make the most awesome fortress ever.

Awesome picture here

Guided tour of awesomeland follows.
  • The main entrance is a pair of double-doors going into a massive six by HOLY SHIT* passage way. I just started stone detailing, but I assure you that the entire thing will get the works soon.
  • Until you cross the river, you'll notice a complete lack of anything other than corridor. This is important.
  • On the other side of the river, we ruin the lovely endless corridor by adding a quick branch off to our waterworks. This small offshoot corridor is just an irrigation canal, pay it no mind .
  • You'll notice that despite the irrigation, there's pretty much nothing here. This is important.
  • Crossing the chasm, half of the awesome plan is revealed. The entire fortress is behind the chasm. Mwuhahaha.
  • To the north you'll see farms. These farms are, quite obviously, entirely irrigation-based, because we are a long long ways from the river.
  • Kitchens. Dining room. Useless hall. Bedrooms.
  • To the south you'll see various crafting hives. Not all of these are full yet.
  • South again you'll see another irrigation corridor. This, once finished, will always flow red with the glorious glow of fresh magma. Let's follow it out, shall we?
  • Brief detour to the chasm. That will be nuked soon.
  • Ignore the room being carved out here, I'll explain this last.
  • Why're we bringing magma across the river..?
  • Because we're going to be able to flood the entire entry corridor with magma, of course!

That's right. No water monsters or sieges because we can magma cannon them. No chasm monsters because they have been nuked. We only have one source of possible threats.

But wait, you may be thinking... "Well, that's all well and good, but how are you ever going to get goods into that monster?"

Glad you asked, Jim. You see that second entrance corridor without the doors? That's big enough for a caravan wagon to fit through. That room I told you to ignore? That's where the trade depot goes.

But now you may be thinking... "Wait, all that security and you're going to have a gigantic corridor all the way into the heart of your fortress?"

But you'd be wrong, Jim. You see how weird that bridge area looks in the path plans?

That's space for a bridge flanked by two aqueducts. Do you know what will be in those aqueducts?

That's right, magma.

The sides of the trade road will be permanently flanked by magma. There will be a drawbridge across them, which will only ever have to come down during trading time.

Basically, I'm having the dwarves harvest liquid awesome.

Any questions?

*Metric HOLY SHIT, not imperial.

I hadn't played a whole lot lately, but I'm curious how it went for that fortress. I'm considering to slowly abandon the rooms before the river on my current fortress for defence reasons.

They all starved because my farmers were idiots.

Well, I have noticed that if you don't have dedicated food stockpiles, the dwarfs won't harvest. Intrestingly every idle dwarf will help to harvest, even nobles... unless you turn on "only farmers harvest" option.

Balancing the managment of jobs is tricky, especially when you get new dwarfs to feed and put to work... :/
