It's one of the many, many things that is in demand and logged on the list of requests. That list is, like, a mile long, but I'm sure magic will be in sooner or later... In particular, people want to also build human / elven towns as well, which is about when the magic will tie in I suppose. Something about dwarfs not traditionally being magic-users... which does hold true for most RPGs that I've played. In any case, it'll be there eventually.

Heh, just got my first nobles.

Stupid dininig room wasn't good enough for them. Oh well, I resolve that next time I play. The game should get harder as soon the dwarfs start demanding higher living standards... when the game goes from a anarchy society into a capitalistic one.

And now I'm really close getting a Dwarfen economy.

I wish I could get a bit less immigrants for now though. >> You can limit population, but I think that would also limit the new nobles coming in... until I start killing off dwarfens hmm.

Nobody bugs me anymore. Not wildlife, immigrants, nobles, sieges, nothing.

That's something I considered. xD I flooded the world with water once by mistake, though water is for some reason not fatal outside the cave for some reason.

Flooding the world with lava seems to be a good way to get out of a tricky situation. As long you don't forget to lock the doors.

I took the slightly less awesome approach and dug a moat outside my fortress that I can fill with lava.

Same great lava flavor, less of the burning the land until you can't get lumber.

Just restarted the game, because I was really unhappy with the layout of my fortress (tight corridors at entrance) and it was a general mess planning wise. Now restarted, and only made a break to limit population at 50. I won't increase until everyone gets a room and everything is spinning along fine.

Here you can see my (too big) farm and my barracks where my (rather small) army trains and rest, and the fishery where they do fish cleaning (I wish it would automatically start fish cleaning whenever possible). Shows also how custom stockpiles are useful, I have a pile for seeds, a pile for unprocessed fish, otherwise the poor dwarfs would have to walk into the kitchen whenever they want to haul something.

1st dining room, some random goods storage to the right, and refuse at the bottom. The Miasma isn't usually a problem as the room is enclosed. I also rather want to keep it indoors, otherwise bones... which is useful at the workshop disappears now and then.

My main living quarters. Sadly not enough rooms... but I try to fix that. >> Mayor, manager and broker living quarters are on the right part of the screen. There's also workshops to the south that takes care of those pesky stones that tends to be everywhere.

My secondary living quarters, and also home to the magma workshops and furnaces. Layout wise, this fortress is way more better than my first one that I gave up. And there's no criminals! (aka none threw a tantrum and started hurting people...), probably because I got started with food and booze production rather early on. I'm not as sure as how it goes military wise. I also limited my population to 50... although it's up to 73 now, so I guess it's a limit that the game doesn't follow too harshly... however I don't get as much immigrants in each batch as before, my latest batch only had nobles.

Edit: (Hope you don't mind Squash Monster, that I edited your first post in the thread. )

The entire Squash Monster fortress (big)

Features of note:

  • Really big front hallway.
  • Awesome dwellings.
  • Huge-tastic dining hall.
  • Complete lack of barracks of any form.
  • Almost-complete magma moat system.

Hmm, why not smooth road? (basically road built on stone blocks). I think the human merchants preferred that type, and it looks better too. Also, you can use detail stone on the stones outside, like I did... melts in perfectly with my road.

Here's mine. Yeah, I really like to detail my stone. Very hourglass shaped layout too, with hallways sticking out at the end for mining after ore's.

I like detailed stonework too, but I don't have any legendary detailers yet (I started my detailing projects a few years in) so it goes slow.

I'll probably go ahead and detail the road though. That's a good idea.

Well, unless I start a new colony. I'm getting a bit sick of a few parts of this one. I want to try to make my next one entirely behind the river, too.

I had a huge orgy of a goblins and dwarfs.

Needless to say, the results aren't pretty. But then I guess that's a excuse to move some rooms a bit deeper into the fortress, such as that dining room. Also the siege happened while a human caravan came, so while I probably have a bit nice loot now... they should be pissed even if I didn't kill them.

My experiment with making the entire settlement behind the chasm was going fantastically for a while.

Unfortunately, my mechanic was far too slow to get my irrigation system set up in time, the small farm I set up for the interim had a series of crop failures, and elephants stopped me from gathering plants.

So everyone starved. Whoops.

I'm gonna try again though.

Great, someone threw a tantrum and destroyed one of my bridges... and fell into the chasm. XD He was standing on the bridge while destroying it haha.

...and now it just crumbled. Great. XD I try to reclaim it, but it's gonna be tricky with the world flooded. My last dwarf died as I tried to create a anti-flood... so maybe. <<

I probably should build some proper apartments soon... but at least notice how I flattened the whole front of the mountain and smoothed it. xD Took really long time.

Hahaha. Nice one.

You've gotta imagine how that would look in real life. You walk up to this mountain and the whole thing has been smoothed up to however high. Crazy.

I'm doing well. been maybe 2 years, but eh. I still haven't reached the chasm yet, though.

Although seriously, go have a look under dev and look at the movies of the 3D system that DF is updating into. HOLY SHIT! It just looks freaking awesome.

My Fortress, so far

I'm the only one who winds up with lots of Bronze?

...seems like Bronze coins are useless too. :/ Shame as it would be way more efficient than making copper coins.

And heh, saw the 3D stuff. Seems to be more like 3-4 different levels and not that total 3D (while it probably would be cool to keep digging down, it would obviously take it
s toll on performance if you could do it really deep), but I can see how that can improve gameplay.

Squash Monster: Yeah, heh. Notice the little room at the bottom? There was a gem in the wall there, so I winded up mining it a bit. I would have fun making several fake entrances, but I suspect the AI wouldn't be fooled by that. (a human in adventure mode might though heh)

Edit: Also, the way the game works.. it's usually a good idea to have a extra small bridge somewhere incase someone destroys one of the main bridges out of a tantrum. :/ Otherwise you get alot of hell trying to rebuild a new bridge.

I'm so evil.

An execution chamber, the bottom lever opens the main floodgate, while each lever is connected to a floodgate in each cell.
Main floodgate open
Testing on prison cell no 1
In the name of science, let's test it on a horse, I had too many of them around anyway
The horse is chained
Now let's open the floodgate for prison cell no 4.
It's trying to escape, but don't get too far as it's chained.
Time to butch it for some meat, I guess.

Reason for this? Well, I kinda started to get annoyed how some of my prisoners acted... and in the eyes of the dwarfs it would be seen as a 'accident' too.

Edit: Expanded prison cell, amongst other stuff. If the fortress guard demands more chains again I probably just build another prison somewhere else. I need to reconstruct the levers anyway (probably just reconstruct them, wait on all getting removed then rebuild) as they're in a messy order that doesn't make sense. >>

I had a recent siege as you can see. The stone traps helped alot. Although I think I should start training a bigger military. I also started to build areas for the dwarfs to live in.

I should probably create bigger food storages and more kitchens too. Also created a proper graveyard, seems like that even if a body rotted away long time ago the dwarf will still get a coffin assigned. So I had to create quite a few of them. At least the dwarfs won't get as unhappy whenever a friend dies.

Edit: Got starvation and lots of tantrums. Almost lost around 50 dwarfs in total (including the siege before) I did have lots of food, just not processed food. :/ Some food need to be cooked first before eating, kinda funny seeing dwarfs starving to death everywhere when you have tons of syrup...
