Oh god, just when I thought that rogue-like games was dead.

You won't see me for a few hours when playing this...

Ah yes, I was going to post about this eventually, in the freeware games thread. I wanted to wait until the newest version was released, which will add a shitload of new features. I haven't played it in quite a while, for just that reason. However, based on this list, the new version will probably be released Very Soon (tm).

But yeah, I should get back into this game. I never did make it very far before something deadly happened. It has an incredibly steep learning curve.

And it could require a better manual.

I guess I just have to play around with it until I get it. :/ Like how I learned nethack. xD

Oh god, don't remind me about nethack! Frankly, I suck at every roguelike I've ever played, which may explain why I don't play them very often. If I had the patience, I'm sure I could get better at them, but the problem is that I don't. Still, I'll be on a roguelike binge once in a while, and then I won't touch them again for months. Methinks it's just about time for another binge.

Hey...
I remember reading about this in Computer Gaming Magazine. I think.

Just two guys made it after throwing together all of their ideas. They came up with this.
They stuck to ASCII for...a specific reason, I can't remember what it was. Eh wells.

I go play now.

If you stick with ASCII, you're never limited by graphics. You can have a dwarf have a spear through his heart and a leg ripped off in this game really easily. Doing that with graphics means either making everything modular or drawing a TON of graphics.

That might not be their reason, but it is a reason.

If you need a manual, the dwarf fortress wiki is a good idea. Read Getting Started, Levers, Metalsmithing, and Irrigation, at least.

In other news, I just flooded my entire fortress in an irrigation accident. Two dwarves died.

I don't understand the point of this game. Or how it works.

I was doing fairly well, but then the supports I had placed in the main workshop failed

I thought of a novel fire extinguisher system to deal with the fact that

dwarves apparently like wearing flaming Pants (see the FIRE page on the DF wiki)

I don't have a knack for games that complicated
I've never played a Roguelike though, but perhaps I can give this another shot.

Squash monster, that post helped alot. I should have played around with stockpiles more. The random stones being over my mine started to annoy me. And I was kinda clueless with how getting started with a farm, but I guess I will do insane mining now.

Taking another shot at it... Got some floodgates, etc. set up and creating a dual-source irrigation system (mostly because I haven't reached the uderground river yet )

Fun game, though.

Sukasa: I did not know that O_o. Maybe I should build a flood room for that . And yeah, I don't really like using the outside water. It's not very hard to get to the inside river anyway.

Sonicandfails: If you don't like complicated and would like to try a roguelike, maybe you should give IVAN a try?

Ailure: Yeah, the random stones bug me too. Don't make a hugetastic stone stockpile for them though. Few things* drive production to a halt faster than a huge stone stockpile waiting to be filled. If you really want to get rid of them, a small stockpile, a few dedicated stone hauling dwarves, and some craftsdwarves shops set up to churn out stone crafts. They'll help you buy stuff from the caravan easily, and increase immigration, too.

Advanced stuff: Start your settlement off with two mining dwarves (make sure they have picks), a carpenter/cutter, a mason, two farmers, and a mechanic/fisher. Have at least three dogs. Have enough food, including one of each of each of the cheap meats, and a good amount of all the seeds. Have one miner go straight to the river and another go in as far as needed for where you want your craft shops.

nice * note XD

BTW, by dual-source I mean from either river. I 'spose creating a permaflood in a (stone) box might work too

Yet again, what I said before citation needed swiped the board... This wiki is useful.

This game looked great, I downloaded it, started it up and decided to try adventure mode, then I saw there was no magic and quit. That was exactly what happened, I booted up character creation, saw no magic skill and said "I can't have a mage! Screw this!" I'll come back to it eventually, but the shock of being unable to play as a mage after expecting to be able to do so takes time to wear off for me. I like Mages too much.
