Well it's been a long time since I've written any sprites. There were some that I wanted to do that I just never got around to making. Here are a couple things that I have worked on, and hopefully you'll see some more in the future.


This one should be easy to recognize. It's a SMB1 style Blooper. Nothing fun or exciting.

This one is a result of some experimentation. It's actually 3 sprites working together. First, there's a generator that will allow Big Mario to shoot an Ice Blast by pressing X or Y. The Ice Blast turns any enemy it touches into an Ice Block. The Ice Block is a solid block that thaws into a Moving Coin. As is, the Ice Blast must be inserted as sprite 21 and the Ice Block as sprite 22, but this can easily be changed by tweaking the ASM files.

I really needed that blooper for my Ocean Commotion level; that ice power looks pretty nifty as well.

From the sound of things it's like you're making these as easily as someone can pop bubblewrap.

Glad to see Bloopers being released to everybody. The entire SMB1 crew can now be reunited.

Im still waiting on classic koopa troopa that dont pop out of their shells.
Unless thats been made already.

We've known how to do this for a little while. You have to use a hex editor to make the change, and it affects all the Koopas in the game instead of being a custom sprite which you can insert separately. Mattrizzle's method can be found here, or you can accomplish basically the same thing by changing just two addresses:

0x98C6 [1A]
Change to 04 to prevent shelless Koopas from hopping out of stunned shells

0x0AC15 [02]
Change to FF to prevent Koopas from spawning shelless Koopas when jumped on.

Yeah, you're right. So unexciting. I mean, seriously, who can't code a SMB1 Blooper these days?

Sarcasm aside, nice job. That frozen coin idea looks very useful and interesting, and could provide a wide variety of puzzles if you have a P-Switch at your disposal

Good news! I was contacted by MiOr, the creator of Mario Fantasy and various custom sprites. He originally didn't want his work distributed, but has decided to allow some of his sprites to be used. From the email:

As Carol says at SMWC fourm, we study how to make sprites by your original source codes.
But I rejected to release sprites.
I was wrong, of course not you.
If you didn't release Sprite Tool, I couldn't make them.
So, I decided to send more sprites to you.

You can get them here

The included sprites are:
Gusty
Inverted Podoboo
Bully (can be small or large depending on the extra bit)
Horizontal Thwomp (uses the extra bit for direction)
Bumpty
Ptooie

Nice sprites, most of the credit should go to the creator whomever they are.

Just thought of an I idea, when most of the SMB. 3 sprites have been created someone should get full permission to use them and create a SMB. 3 remake.

Then again, its just only an idea.

Look forward to seeing some more and yes I know some of the creators are a touchy on sprite distribution.

sorry mikeyk didn't see that.

Could you give us a rundown of what all the sprites do for those who haven't seen these enemies in action and where to get the ExGFX from?

Edit: BTW, in Sprite Tool there is an error assembling Boss Bass.
I know it is a WIP but any chance of posting a working version.
