This ticks me off. Isn't there a .SET/.QIC generator for Microsoft Backup (DOS 6.22 version) or at least some archive tool that can open these old volumes?

Why not obtain a old OS that comes with the backup tool that opens those files? There's plenty of virtual machines that can do the job easily. <<

I do have Microsoft Backup for DOS, Win3.1 and Win95, however they require .SET files to open the volumes. Can't open the .001, 002 etc volumes directly with anything.

Also the internet is loaded full of stuff relating to Windows XP backup, which is completely different.

Here, I found this on google. It sounds like a very similar problem to yours, and there is a solution offered. Here's the relevant part of the page:

Posted by "http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=609142"
Backups Made Using MS-DOS 6.x

To restore a backup created with the backup programs included with
MS-DOS 6.x, use the Msbackup.exe program located in the
Other\Oldmsdos\Msbackup folder on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. To run this
program, copy all the files from the folder on the Windows 95 CD-ROM
to a folder on your hard disk. Double-click the Msbackup.exe file in
Windows Explorer to start it. For information about using the
Msbackup.exe program, start the program, and then click Restore on the
Help menu..."

I think it is extremely likely your backups were made with a version
of MSDOS. From what I read, these two approaches should be backward
compatible with even earlier versions. And since you have copies of
the files, it surely does not hurt to try.

Here is link to the msbackup.exe executable if you do not have it:

Odd... the person for which the question was answered only mentioned .001 files, so I thought it'd work without a .set or .qic file. Well, it these .001, .002 files are like the ones I'm hearing about on other google searches, there are claims that various unzippers will extract them. I'm just throwing this out there, I'm sure you've already tried that. They claim that WinRAR and 7zip will extract the files. Wish I could help more. :/

From the sounds of it, .sic/.qic contains metadata about the packed files. All I wonder though is how it was lost in the first place. You could try to reverse-engineer a such file and construct a such file manually.
