Article [slashdot].
So I was reading this article and it got me thinking about something. It seems that many of the anti-virus/spyware vendors are a little negligent in their methods. Also, by the very methods that these packages work, as catchup programs, they are quite flawed in being adequately effective. I've also noticed that most computers that use AV software, like my parent's computer, eventually become very very slow. I gave up on using anything of the sort back in my freshman year of college three years ago. I just decided it would be easier to use good software to prevent inadvertant files from loading and installing on my computer and setting up my computer to not allow certain traffic into my computer and to not install things without asking. I also reformat my OS drive and reinstall about every 6-9 months, depending on the performance of my computer. Anyways, what do you all think of AV softare, do you use it, or do you just pay attention to what you do online and take the necessary precautions? |

I keep my ports closed, don't run suspicious executables, keep my startup programs clean, and use Firefox.
I have Ad-Aware SE and the DOS version of F-Prot installed, but they're rarely used. ____________________ [citation needed] |

I'm holding down AVG and I've got Ad-Aware SE on backup (not used, due to Firefox). That's about all I need on a 56K, really. Used to have ZoneAlarm but it used too much overhead.
If that ever occurred, I would figure the first thing that would happen once the public got a hold of it would be to grab whatever specific spyware and modify it for their own means to get into other comps for whatever purpose they need. It'd probably work until whoever got another version of anti-virus out but at the same time it just gives people out there another VERY insecure opening. |

There is only one computer in my house that has AV--my laptop. All my desktops do not have viruses because my parents rarely go to shady places and we use Firefox.
I have two levels of firewalls, my router and the one Microsoft provides in the OS. Unless someone makes an active attack on my home network, I don't think I need more security. |

I have Kaspersky on my computer as a backup, since I usually just turn it off unless I'm running a scan (which I do about every 3 months). ____________________ |

I currently have Avast! and Spybot running, both of which have a resident component. Since I have DSL, which is an "always-on" connection, I figured it'd be wise to have something running. That said, this PC's only been infected once in recent memory, and that was due to some temporary stupidity on my part. I only leave select ports open on my router's firewall and haven't felt a need to run a software firewall alongside it. ____________________ What sig? I don't have a sig. |

I used to have Norton Internet Security, but my college requires Symantec Antivirus, so I had to uninstall NIS.
In its place, I've installed Norton Personal Firewall (it's a good thing I did, because I soon discovered that I kept occasionally getting attacked by random people on the network). The only thing about NPF I don't like is Norton Protection Center, which basically does nothing except tell you when you don't have a firewall or an antivirus installed. I disabled the service through services.msc or whatever it's called. I browse safely, but in the event that I get infected, I try using hijackthis. ____________________ |

Maybe anti-virus makers create uncurable viruses on purpose, and shortly after, come up with the solution crafted beforehand. That would be very dirty business, but it's a possibility...
But in general, the fact that a computer program can sneek up in important folders and/or mess-up with important files without the user doing anything stupid still puzzles me completely... |

Built-in firewall with XP, and AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware. But you want a QFT? Here's your QFT, and a bit of FTW.
The best anti-virus? Common sense. |

At the expense of seeming like an idiot, I use NOD32, Lavasoft Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, and Zonealarm for a firewall; I don't keep my Internet on all the time, or download any hazardous materials. |

All I have is clamwin, and only reason I downloaded it is because of it being the only open source anti-virus I know. >> The Clam anti-virus is mostly made for servers apparently though. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Well, usually trojans either come through exploits or software you downloaded. >>
There's a good reason why I use firefox with no-script. It's liking having javascript turned off all the time, expect when you come across a site that needs javascripting (and that is safe as well), you can "whitelist" it and let it use scripts. >> Most browser exploits, no matter if it's IE, Opera or Firefox are related to javascript in one way or another. :/ ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

My parents had me put NAV on their computer as well, and man has that created so many issues, and not just for them but for me. I'll get phone calls at all times of the day, with questions about whether or not something that NAV marks as questionable but in all reality is of no harm to the computer needs to be deleted. Sometimes I won't recognize the file, I'll try searching for it on my computer, I won't find it, so I'll tell them to let NAV destroy it and then their entire system crashes because it was an essential file. Ah, I had NAV for about two weeks before I got so frustrated with it questioning everything trying to access the internet (really, firefox and trillian want the internet, no shit, stop blocking me). Anyways, that was my last forary into the anti-virus domain, and eventually I dropped Ad-Aware because I just never seemed to need to use it. I have to agree about the corporate versions of AV software. Our companies MacAffee seems to work just find and doesn't bother me one bit, but then again our Admin has pretty stringent policies on internet access and you have to request access to most websites outside our companies intranet and specific websites of important clients and stuff. |
