Civility's not the best word for what I mean, but I'll go with it.

Would it be possible to actually put a rule into effect saying NOT to gang up on people for making what are seen as dumb hacks? The mob mentality does not help anything, particularly given that practically every single person posting tends to say nothing beyond "this sucks" or the giant "FAIL" that seems to be gaining popularity recently.

Or perhaps just force people to actually give worthwhile critiques?

It would be nice. I'm actually scared of asking questions about hacking (since I know nothing of it) incase people flame me for being stupid :/

Generally, people are nicer when an experienced hacker announces intentional joke hacks. Rather than the more common situation where a total newbie claims their efforts to be good.

Well, actually, knowing "nothing" about hacking is not supposed to be bad, as each one of us has been there at some point in the past. In this case, it's mostly about how people treat others according to their level of knowledge in general (and in this case, ROM Hacking knowledge)...

On the other hand, if you make it clear that you're not making reasonable efforts in your hacking activities, some people will be annoyed sooner or later...

As for the bad critiques, I think the most we can do in the forums is to be more severe when it comes to the ROM Hacking Related Releases section. If it's your first release of a game or utility, it's more likely that it will be buggy or unpolished. Most people are aware of that. However, stupid hacks do exist, and too many hacks like these are not something we're wishing for...

Eh, I won't have to worry about it--if I make a hack, I'll be well aware it'll start out sucky and take years to make good.

They just fail to instruct newbies how it goes in a non-stupid manner.

Some of us are too use to a place that has like 50 tutorials, and then people post 1 level youtube "mods" with glitched up grapics, floating lava, and 5000000 3up moons....

At SMWCentral we had like 14 of those in 1 week
EDIT: and then we got this http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=thread&id=2644

This might be a interesting read, especially for those who are afraid to ask questions. Might be something to sticky too.

And unfortunately that's how humans works. People mob up against a common enemy because they feel good about it. The preferable way would just be telling a moderator who can close the thread to... close it. :/ I'm also tired on the orgies people had over those bad threads, when a quick statement or two is enough.
