So Nintendo recall Mario Party 8 for the UK shelves after I get a copy. I looked up why, and it turns out it's just the word spastic. It's one of those times the US translation doesn't work out.

Oh well, I'm not returning my copy at all. I'm still annoyed it was held back at first.

This can be summed up in one smile/emote:
I mean, spastic isn't such a bad word. Why, it's only as bad as "damn". Seriously...

Spastic is used around here for stuff like really bad or really retarded.

Spastic is a derogatary term used here to indicate someone has severe mental or retardation problems.

Another recall? Meh. At least it's not a big uproar like some were.

I have that old US PS2 version of GTA San Andreas which was re-rated to AO, they discontinued such copies after the rating change. I think those fetch high eBay values if you can sneak one in normal areas without being caught (AO stuff is supposed to be listed elsewhere on the site).

PC and Xbox ones are probably even rarer, being on shelves only a few weeks instead of over 6 months like for PS2.

It's not even nearly as bad as "damn," so what does that tell you.

It means the same thing here, but it's not really malicious, it's more of a playful ribbing.

Heck, ten or fifteen years ago, every teenager in America was calling someone "spaz."

Looks like someone's getting fired

I wasn't even aware people were offended by the word spastic until I read this thread. I thought retarded was more offensive, but, what do I know?

Like how CP is used for that in Sweden... which also have a origin in the same disease too.

Yeah, I've never heard of "spastic" being used as an insult. (Spaz, however, I have seen.)

You have to keep in mind though that this game is supposed to be kid-friendly, so anything offensive has to go. If it were say Zelda or something, I'd be a lot quicker to disagree with the decision.

Mario Party 1 wasn't even close to kid-friendly. I'm sure at least every kid ever had hands that were unable to touch anything because of the popped blisters.

Spastic... I always thought it was something along the lines of "hyperactive".

But just how many kids know what spastic means?

It's only offensive in the UK, actually.

Mario Party one is a rip off, if I'm not mistaking everything in the game is predetermined before you do it, if you hit the dice, the game knows what number it will be before you even think of jumping up... I made a savestate, same result each time... so it's not even randomized... if the game wants you to lose, you'll lose...

As for the recall I think it's stupid... one word means that the entire game is offensive... I bet if it was "Fuck" or something the kids wouldn't have complained but the parents would... those same parents really need to strap a hidden mic onto their kids one day... just to hear what they really say...

BS. I have done the same thing on Mario Party 2, with different results each time.
You just messed up and saved when the number was determined. (Read: You were not paying attention to the variables that control randomness.)

On the topic at hand, yeah, it is silly really recalling the game over this.
However it may be offensive to people with other cultures, so I can't really make a firm statement.
