Hello everybody. I was searching to Custom Sprites for SMW, and I found this:

[Link Removed]

When I opened, was full of ASM Files, with great effects. There´s also an type of ips file with an hack, showing how all those asm files works. There´s one, that when you press select, all sprites in the screen suddenly disappears. And other that affect the On/Off switches: when it´s On, affects the sound, making the "Yoshi Drum" sound to appear, and Off to disappear. I think the hack is "Starw".

Someone known of this?

Edit: Lol, the last thing I want is trouble between american and japanese hackers. So, I will remove the link.

Excuse me, good sir, what?

Other than that, this looks fairly interesting. Somebody (not me, feeling lazy) should convert all the ShiftJISed filename titles to UTF-8 for good measure...

What I think he is assuming is that people are going to take the ASM out of the zip and use it in their own hack, and he doesn't want that

If anyone read the README.txt, it mentioned that the author does not want this outside Japan.

I am very positive that Nintendo didn't want us to work on their games either.

If it was any other kind of distribution limitation, I'd probably say it would be ethical to indeed cease using it, but I somehow can't warm up for supporting this kind of blatant nationalism in any way. Nationality is a horrible concept.

I don't think Fuyosa wanted Lunar Magic hacked either, but hey, I am just the devil's advocate here.

Indeed.

And sorry, but internet have no boundaries. It's stupid to limit distribution to a certain country.:/

If they didn't want it to be found, it shouldn't have been put on the WORLD WIDE WEB, that everyone can access.

It's just like 2ch, this kind of nationalism really starts to get annoying after a while. However, it's part of the Japanese culture to want to be 'the best' or 'better than everyone else', which is fine, I guess, but when it leads to pointless nationalism, it's just meh.

I can understand if the author doesn't want anyone to use his asm hacks in a hack without his permission, but when he doesn't anyone who isn't Japanese to use the hacks, then that's just ridiculous.

And that's my Caucasian American opinion.

After actually bothering to transcode the non-autotranslated part of the readme file from ShiftJIS (curse you vernacular encodings D: ), the whole thing gets a little bit of a different look... apparently, the author
- thinks that his ability level is still low, considers this a work-in-progress and would be embarassed to show this to too many people
- hardly knows English at all and would not be able to provide support to English speakers
- says his 2channel-based hacking group does not want the Japanese hacks to become "too famous" outside Japan(from following the discussion there myself, though, I must come to the conclusion that far from all people in that community hold that opinion)
- won't mind a public release once he got better at English and spriting

The original, UTF8ified text:

In the light of that, I am tempted to revise my previously stated opinion in favour of a state of neutrality. On the other hand, of course, Darkdata has sorts of a valid point there. (though I personally still think the separate hacking groups should not try to keep their results concealed from the others)

Ahhhh ok. So it's not just pointless nationalism. I can't read Japanese, so I never would've known that. And yeah, that does change my view. I hope I didn't sound too harsh in my post.

Edit (because I feel like I need to add more):
But yes, there isn't much point in hiding things like this. Hiding a huge rom hacking project or a homebrew project is more understandable, but nobody should need to feel intimidated from sharing something like this. I mean, if he really feels like his skills are low, a way to improve is to get some comments and suggestions by people who he feels are of higher skill. And to do that, he needs to share his work with someone.

You'd be suprised... they still use LZH (or whatever it was), a horribly obsolete and outdated compression algorthm*, just because it was made in Japan -- you rarely see RAR, 7z, or even ZIP come out of there.

Japanese are, in general, nationalistic to the point of refusing to use better things if they're not from Japan, it would seem.

Ah so it is like japanese potters. I do believe they need to destroy their first 1000 pots before releasing a real piece of art. The ASMist here seems to want consolation if it is used, but language barriers keep him/them from understanding.

I fully understand their reasons, but it is unrealistic. Especially on the internet.

@Xkeeper: In history, they let only foreigners into their country to take their technology before kicking them out. But that was a long long time ago.

The world probably would be much better if there was zero nationalism.

Although nice to see that it wasn't nationalism in this case, but being kinda humble about his abilities. I guess it's one of those cultural diffrences that can be a bit tricky to understand, as it's the other way around with western people.

I think I won't be able to use them.Everything is in Japanese, that it's impossible for me to understand. What tool should I use to translate this text?:

;;‚±‚ÌSprite‚ª‰æ–Ê“à‚É“ü‚é‚Ɖ¡ƒXƒNƒ[ƒ‹‚ðƒƒbƒN‚µA‰æ–Ê“à‚ÌSprite‚ªÁ‚¦‚é‚ÆŽ©“®ƒ[ƒv‚µ‚Ü‚·B by–¼–³‚µ

;;
;;¦‚Å‚Á‚Ä‚¢‚¤‚àƒXƒvƒ‰ƒCƒg‚È‚Ì‚Å’ˆÓ

It's the scroollockandteleport sprite.
I think you only need to add this to your level and that's it.

If they truly don't want us using it, they should have left it to pms or something. What can they do? I think it's selfish and they just want to look better than us.
