From what I've seen, it would be both possible and advantageous to make an extension for Firefox to make YouTube play on Windows Media Player instead of Flash Player. Now I'm guessing you're probably thinking "Ewwwww... Micro$oft Player...Blech!", but Flash Player is the real CPU hog here. With Windows Media Player, you get the awesome and efficient ffdshow codec, combined with the speed advantages of an overlay surface.
The results speak for themselves, when I tested Windows Media Player, CPU usage was at 5% for firefox, using YouTube's flash-based player, CPU usage was 40%! So yeah, Flash Player is 8 times slower than Windows Media Player (decoding with ffdshow).
The requirements? You need ffdshow and an FLV Splitter, and now the Windows Media Player plugin for firefox will be able to play FLV files streamed off YouTube.

Only real problem here is that I don't have a clue how to actually make a Firefox extension which would intercept the YouTube pages, and replace the flash-based player with a WMP based one.

*yes, I know it's really libavcodec doing all the real work here, but I'm still giving credit to ffdshow anyway.

For me, that wouldn't help anyways. 56K would time it out.

That's why I use something like YouTubeX. In that vein, I can play whatever file YouTube has to offer (aside from the buys) and save it on my comp. VLC comes in handy viewing those since those are FLVs being streamed by file...far better than using Media Player (unless it's Classic and you have good OpenGL support).
