Well I came up with this idea last night

What if there was a hex editor that allowed you to save discriptions to the Offset. Such as "Mario's Jump Hight" At Address ?x???? And it would save these discriptions in a file like Super Mario World.TXT (named after the rom you discribed) and then whenever it booted up Super Mario World.smc it would also load up the TXT file to identify the ROM Addresses. And the Discription Files would be easy to distribute.

now normally I would not post something like this unless I thought everyone would think its a good idea... but I have no skill at programming.

If anyone would like to help its all theirs However if Fu-so-Ya decides to claim it I have a name suggestion "Lunar Eclipse"

Thank You For Your Time...

PS:You can take the idea no credit goes to me...

Well actuly i came up with the idea of this program also patching a Rom By opening three files the original, the one with the IPS patch Added and the one you want to modify then it identifies the differences between the three and patches however if it has already been modifyed it will tell you and then you get to decide to overwrite an exsisting patch or add on to the original Patch... also this will only take the ASM differences... of cource patches that overlap the original will cause the original patch to be overwritten.

Hex Workshop has a "bookmark" feature. It does essentially what your first post mentions. It just keeps them in a little list, and highlights the offsets, rather than putting the description next to the offset. Gives the added benefit of being able to browse the descriptions quickly, and jump the offset.

If there's one feature I'd like to see in a hex editor, it'd be a more robust Structure Viewer/Editor. It'd be nice to have sort of an Integrated Rom Hack Development Environment, with one large program where I could pick out a section of data and look at it as hex, ascii, graphics tiles, palettes, or whatever, even if it could only view, not modify the structures. Maybe I'll do it myself someday, once I get around to finishing my other half dozen projects.

Slightly off topic, but this seems to be one of the two biggest problems with rom hacking today. Too many projects. The other is laziness, as seen in me.

On a more on-topic note, a "Rom-Hacking IDE" would be great, although a bit of a hefty project considering the community. As I said, over-multitasking, and laziness.
