my tv has this strange flicker in the middle of the screen. it's not going away and it's getting worse. all the cables are plugged in firmly, so that's not the problem. the tv is at least 10 years old; is it just crapping out?

Before I agree with emcee, I have to ask: What does it look like, and does it happen regardless of input source?

Yea, definitely check on another wall outlet to see if it's still doing the same thing.

If nothing else, HDTVs are cheap these days ($400 range starting for decent 32" size).

it's a slow colorless flicker that slowly works it's way from the center to the top of the screen.

do tvs usually last only a decade before they start to die? mine's a sanyo, if it matters.

The tube is dieing. I've seen this case before quite a few times. TV repairmen are able to fix it for a high price (replacing the tube isn't an easy job either).
It is recommended you buy a new TV instead.

My grandparents has a TV which they have had for as long as I can remember, which makes it at least 16 - 17 years old, maybe even 20, and it seems to work alright, though it is a little small...

Well, given the design of their TV I'd say it's from the eighties, so it's probably somewhere around 20. I don't know what brand it is, but I'll make sure to check next time I'm there.

If you want to try fixing it yourself, you could always open the thing up and replace the capacitors (I'm serious). I'd be willing to bet that that would fix it.

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest that. The capacitors hold a charge long after the TV is unplugged, you're libel to get zapped. Besides its probably the tube.

Fixed. Seriously, don't try amateur TV repair; those capacitors hold enough charge to kill very easily.

I nearly killed myself trying to fix my TV... Boy... those sparks were flying when I tried to hook it up to the power again.

Remember kids, playing with live wires is retarded unless you're prone to these things.

Rule of thumb is to only work with one hand. That way if you do get shocked, the charge won't go across your heart.

But I'd say just hit the TV like the Fonz hits the jukebox, and it should work perfectly again.
