For I shall upgrade from my aging bucket of bolts (1.2ghz Athlon, 512mb RAM, a goddamn 3DFX card) to this:

Not the massive beast that magazines drool about building, but it should run everything I want quite well.

I'll probably upgrade it to Vista Buisness if I can do so from XP MC, as I scored a free copy from my school a while back.

And I've got a 1.0GHz PIII and I've got a better DVD DL writer than that.

We sell Acers of similar specs for way less than that...except they're slim comps (about 499 bucks US).

My DVD burner packed it in about a week after getting it and stopped burning anything, just reading, so anything's an upgrade in that area.

Understandable.

Hey, if nothing else you can always pull stuff from the old one and put it in the new one. I'll likely be doing that with the 256MB vid card that I have whenever (if ever) I upgrade provided that whatever comes with it isn't as good.

But my 18x DVD DL writer from Writermaster/MAD-Dog = mwah...too bad it can't perform on my specs. XD

That video card is horrific. You're going to need a new one if you wanna play basically any new game.

Aside from that, it looks good.

That seems ridiculously overpriced.

Bit of a ripoff there, you can pick out better components and operating system and have them installed and double boxed and tested for less than that at Directron. Although shipping might bite you.

Of course, conversion rates are a bit closer than that, but I got my $800 computer and it rocks your $800-something (US) computer. Especially in the Video card and CPU department. And mine is using 2005 technology... O_o

I'm well aware I could get better performance for less money by building my own, but I've not the ability.

Does anyone have more information on the video card's inadequacies? Like comparisons and such? My videocard before it fried spectacularly was a Radeon 9700 Pro, if that gives a point of comparison.

Your new card is greatly superior to your old one, but it's twice as slow as mine, which is three years old.

Great - all I ask is that the Source Engine and FEAR are playable, and my old card did a brave if flawed job of that (dipping framerates). This will do me fine.

Source Engine tends to run well on older cards. Not so much for FEAR.

Do keep in mind that computer has 7.1 audio. 7.1 speaker sets may be scarce (compared to the common 5.1 models), but are definitely worth finding.

$940 is still a gigantic ripof for that, sorry to say.

Yeah, that's a pretty massive rip off.

I ordered the following last week:

Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 CPU (And before you say "But the CPU in mine is faster", read this).
2GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR2 @ 533MHz RAM
Samsung SpinPoint 400GB SATA2 HDD
EVGA GeForce 7600GT (256MB) Video Card
Sony Q170a CD & DVD+/-RW drive.
Raidmax Elite ATX-208 Case
Thermaltake 430W PSU
ATA/SATA cables.
Case Fan
19" NEC CRT
Keyboard/Mouse

Final Price (Including taxes and shipping): $640 USD.

I didn't get speakers because I use nice headphones.

Assembling a PC is stupid easy: The cost savings as demonstrated are more than enough reason to learn how to do it.

There's also the benefit of being able to overclock, alot of pre-built PCs come with that disabled. I'd have built mine, but my parents, funding it as a graduation gift, were afraid I'd break it.

Sweet stuff X.

I got this last July. I love it so far, AND I never had to scan my computer for virus', mailware, spyware, etc.

And I get a good ass resolution size and such.

I was about to prompt you about the fact that your DVD writer is the only thing younger than five years old in your system

I'd say something about my computer's age, but it's an HP DV8000, so that should say enough

Edit: Review of it, although I got mine for $900.

Of course, even at $900, it still leaves your overpriced pile of scrap parts out of the water, which is sad. SliverX's method is a lot better, and if it's anything like reassembling one, probably not hard.

(Note: the laptop I linked to has some bonus features like an extra 512 M of RAM and a lightscribe burner, but 2GB of memory for this would cost about $210 at most)

I've only bought one prebuilt "IBM-compatible" PC new: Back in 2000. It was a Slot-1 (ugh!) NEC PIII 500mhz with no AGP slot (year 2000 and no AGP, WTF?!). I didn't look at the price, hence I don't know how much that cost.

Despite not a single part remaining from it, my current build is still descended from there because I've swapped in and out countless hardware over the years.

I wouldn't call it a piece of crap, it's better than mine (sans video card) and mine works just fine.
