A short while ago, I turned the above game on. To see how I was doing, I checked my Wi-Fi records, which were 23-3 (Wins from rookies, I think). After some struggling, I manage to connect to NintendoWFC, and hit Worldwide. I get three opponents, and start off at Cheep Cheep Beach.
Now, this is where it went wrong. The race didn't start for a whole minute, then partially freezes for another. Next thing, it says I got disconnected from NintendoWFC! I have to wait for 30 seconds before the sound comes out though, then it responds to A. In a panic, I rush to the Records to see if I took damage from the disconnect. Wierdest thing, it said 23-0!

What happened there, I have no idea. But those losses I won't regret, since snakers gave them to me.

(Afternote: What, this is boring? I picked up an 100% record from a glitch! At least post something...)

Yeah, this glitch has been known for some time. I know how to cause it at will. I don't particularly feel like saying, though.

I take issue with what you have to say, though. You have something against snakers? Snakers are just people who cared enough to get halfway decent at the game. If you get to cry foul at people who use a technique obviously intended to be used (as evidenced by the fact that it was possible in previous Mario Kart games and Nintendo didn't take it out, and even used it themselves in staff ghosts), then you may as well cry foul at people who use the A button, because it's faster than turning around and backing up for the entire course. Also, cry foul at people who use items when it would help them. Because, of course, items ruin the game, and if you should accidentally pick one up you ought to discard it immediately in a way that ensures no one picks it up, right? Because really, that distinction is no more arbitrary than the one you apparently have against Snaking. It's not the fault of the people who beat you that you immediately branded it cheap. The game knows no distinction between cheap and not cheap, it only knows victory and defeat. You don't have to play Mario Kart DS; you can be fine playing your inferior homebrewn version of Mario Kart DS where snaking doesn't exist. But if you do that, don't yell at the people who play the real game.

Well that was a mouthful.

I do agree with Alastor though. I hate that snaking can be done, but its in game and can be performed by anyone. Oh, and I had NO IDEA there was snaking in previous Mario karts. *Rushes to Gamecube and throws in Double Dash*

I think it's marvelous. It adds another layer of interactivity to the game - you can always be doing something. Instead of just holding down the A button as you go down a straightaway, you can be snaking. It's less boring that way, and races also go by much faster.

If I may intrude, just what is snaking? Is it along the same lines of knowing how long until a bomb lasts in super bomberman 5 so you can throw it on someone and have them die without a chance?

Because I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about but I would like to

basically it's powersliding down a straightaway by weaving back-and-forth across it whilst sliding. it makes you go a lot faster than normal.

I love snaking, been doing it since I learned on my own just a few days after buying MKDS. And I didn't even know it was called snaking, I thought I made the move up myself D:

Then people need to quit bitching and get with the times. Thats like trying to win at tetris without using the left button

Woah, hold on now. That's dangerous territory you've gotten in to here. The left button is incredibly cheap. Surely even you can recognize that.

From Mario Kart 64 or Double Dash, right? I don't remember seeing staff ghosts snaking in Mario Kart DS.

Alastor's right, though. Snaking requires more skill, which requires practice. And practice and execution of snaking equals more replayability to a replayable game. It also makes Figure-8 Circuit a bit better.

I can't help but feel a little guilty when I'm playing against those who don't snake. The lack of a challenge on Wi-Fi is mainly the reason I stopped playing.

Someone read the "Play to Win" article. I agree with everything.

MKDD has snaking. If you play without snaking, you're severely handicapping yourself.

I don't know about you, but when the choice came between "rapidly wiggling my thumb back and forth on this tiny fucking d-pad" and "just ignoring it and saving myself the pain", I think I'd pick the latter too.

Granted, I don' tcare about winning or losing either (or maintaining a win record, whatever.)

Just to add a little note to the snaking discussion, the Official Nintendo Magazine had a "Mario Encyclopedia" released in an issue once (which I recieved from a friend who went to europe), which explicitly describes Snaking as a cheating method

What the fuck is ONM? It's not Nintendo Power...
Anyways, you get used to snaking. It becomes natural.

Yes, well, Nintendo Power says Snaking's a-ok.

On an unrelated note, I was once interviewed for Nintendo Power (this was after I won the PAX '06 MKDS tournament). I have no idea if I was actually mentioned in it, as I never actually read the issue it was supposedly in.

I agree with Xkeeper.

I have a friend who uses snaking during every match. He wins against all of the non-"cheaters" every single time.

Every single time.

That includes against me, because I consider it cheating and, well, what Xkeeper said.

On another note, if this was in MK64, why haven't I heard anything about it before?
