Okay, it's official, I'm a total n00b when it comes to IRC...

So my question is, what IRC clients do people recommend? Preferably free clients, since I currently can't afford to buy anything at all (no job yet...). I tried searching around, but the sheer number of clients for Windows scares me. The only one I looked at was mIRC, and of course, that's Shareware, so out of the question...

Any suggestions?

Trillian is alright, although it has issues sometimes. It also lets you connect to your MSN, Yahoo, and AIM accounts in a single program, so it's a nice space saver. Oh, and ICQ too I think.

IM clients... ugh.

I've severed all ties to those vile programs. I never plan to look back.

Can you explain some of these issues?

Bersirc is good, I used that for a while ... but most people just use mIRC and ignore the fact it's shareware

I use Klient but that's not free either

I have a crappy oldv ersion of mIRC that doesn't require paying for (it just occasionally opens a browser window saying Register me!)...

I can upload it if you want

mIRC + Eight thousand scripts

You can do crazy stuff no other client can with that, and assimilate functionality from other clients too!

I actually personally don't encounter any Trillian-side problems; every problem seems to be the IRC server's fault so far. Lots of other people seem to have problems though, so I was just laying that down as a possibility.

Doesn't mIRC lock up if you use it after the trial is over?

Xk: if you want to. I'll download it.

I use mIRC, and all it does is pop up a "Please register this program!" window at startup. I haven't had a problem with it yet.

I've also used Trillian, and I might have stayed with it if it weren't for mIRC's scripting capabilities.

Nope. I've been free trialling with the newest version for much past a month now.

Pheetz: I'm sure it's great, too, but does it support scripts from mIRC? I've become dependent on many of my scripts from it.

Either way, scriptable clients are always the best, if they have good support for it.

I thought the later versions of mirc refused to connect to servers when the trial expired.

For example, I use v6.16

No, it uses Perl (that should explain enough.) And there isn't exactly a Windows version available. And text-only (afaik.)

Been using 6.21 long past the trial.

While they want money, they want to give people the time to procure it, too. It will never lock you out. Merely nag.

Just like most shareware of the 90's.

Am I the only person here who uses Opera's built-in client?

I mean sure, it's pretty limited, but it doesn't bug you to pay. And you can use the internets at the same time too!

What he said. There's no way I'm paying. ;D I'm only bothered about paying once a month-ish. And I close it and move on with life.

I like my IRC client, it's just not much help for you Windows users. It's called Colloquy and it's for Mac OS X

I don't use IRC much though.

@Xkeeper: The SilverEX build is pretty spiffy, primarily because it's free. I personally don't like X-Chat (it's awesome on Linux, but slow and bulky, from my experience, on Windows), but I'm sure there are plenty of people who would totally dig a free X-Chat, so there you are.

There is too a Windows version! (Scroll down to "Binaries", "Binary packages for older versions") Okay, so it's out-of-date (0.8.9 compared to 0.8.10) and I don't even think it supports scripting. BUT IT'S THERE.

On an unrelated side-note, I thought I had posted this before. Either it was deleted by communism, or... most likely, I forgot to hit submit while I was writing something. OH WELL.

I will also add that I'm an mIRC[loser] [loser replacing a slightly more derogatory word I was going to use]
