K, peeps...need some help.
Trying to see if I can get some PC100 strips of RAM into my system without it giving me an FU error. Found that... Here's the thing, those chips are square, the chips on my current strips are rectangular. That going to mean anything or is this just as good as any other PC100 strip? There were some additional things on the name that had me going 'wut?'. I'm surprised PC100 even goes that high. Am I looking at this right? |

It looks like typical bargin bin RAM ("Surf and download faster, durr!").
But I can't immediately think of any reason it wouldn't work. The size of chips shouldn't matter as long as all of the connections to the mobo are the same... ...and even then, don't they have a return system you can use if it doesn't work? ____________________ I dealt with it. |

It's web only. The return in itself is something I'd rather not do...I'd rather buy and be done with it.
And it wasn't that I was buying it with the intent of it being exceptionally fast...it's PC100 fer chrissakes... Of course, if you've got a better BETTER take on PC100 without the excess cost I wouldn't MIND hearing it. |

Posted by ValkyrieNo, I meant the description. Very rarely does higher RAM allow you to download faster (unless you already have a pathetic RAM count of less than 128M) And, eh. It's PC100, and although IANTS, it should probably work. ____________________ I dealt with it. |

Pst...see the edit...find me cheaper.
70 bucks for old RAM sucks. |

I could go to Fry's sometime soon (read: next week...) and look at their RAM board. I know that 512M of RAM is usually about that expensive, although I only looked at 1G and might need to look again

I managed to find this on eBay.
33 bucks. Only glaring thing is the double-size (which would fit in my tower). |

Are you sure it will fit? I tried to add a 256 to my computer, and it was a completely different shape.
Look at the one(s) in your computer. If they have ONE notch, like the one at the bottom, the Radioshack one will probably work. If they have TWO notches, like the second from the bottom, the Ebay one will work. (If they look like any of the others, get a new computer. ) ____________________ "I'm sick of it and I'm out. Yes, but I only had that problem when I got PC133 instead of PC100... Every stick of PC100 I've come across has the same pin layout. ____________________ I dealt with it. |

Hmm... Then maybe the picture on RadioShack is wrong...

Regardless, the 2x256es has been bought. I know I have the 2 notch. |

I made the mistake once of putting a DDR stick of RAM into a computer accepts PC133 or less (yes it fitted without cracking anything). How was I supposed to know (at the time) that DDR is 2.5V max and PC133 (or less) is 3.3V
Lesson here--even if it does fit, make sure the voltage of the slot is correct for the stick you are putting in. I noticed about two weeks ago that the current generation of DDR ram now uses only 1.8V instead of 2.5V |

Posted by neotransotaku ...Whatever happened to industry standard? (Well, I suppose we need another thread for "Things that Maky You Think 'WHY?'" for this kind of thing. I mean, come on. They designed the whole thing so this can't happen - and I know, I've tried that before - and then someone comes along and decides, "wouldn't it be better if they all fit?" All this stuff they've standardized, and then someone just has to come along and screw it up. So now you're stuck, not knowing anymore if "it fits" means "it will work," making everything standardization is for, pointless. If this is a trend, soon no one will know when this thingy is compatible with this other thingy, until it reaches the point when no one even knows what either "thingy" is. So... *continues exaggerated rant*) ____________________ "I'm sick of it and I'm out. See you around." ~Cpu's last post here |

Well mine had the voltage right on PC133 that I tried installing on here and the system came up showing that I had the correct amount of RAM that I put it, even standalone, but when it came to loading up Windows, it could read the drive but it couldn't write to it. Weird no? I came up with Page Fault and Registry Errors. I haven't seen Page Faulting in a long ass time. |

There's already no guarantee that a given RAM stick is compatible just because it fits. Your board has to support its speed too. I discovered this with an old computer of mine when I put in one too fast for it. The POST screen was even glitchy randomness. |

Well guys, I got the sticks of RAM.
It's halfway right... I'm currently running on 384MB of RAM, which is double what I have...but I would like to run on 512. You're probably wondering wtf I'm doing running on one when I could have two in there. Well here's what happened, I put both sticks in and I get a '102-System Board Failure'. I swap the sticks around and I don't get any errors but the system halts and the floppy and hard disk lights remain lighted. I'd like to know if this is by chance a limit to my motherboard or is it something that I need to reset in the BIOS or do I have a frapped stick of RAM? |

Faulty stick, two different speeds, or not enough power to run both would be my guesses. |
