use newer xp-only m$ compiler as 'minor upgrade' in version shutting off thier win2k and win9x userbase

rely absolutely on trial periods when virtual machines can always be set up to get around those either by resetting or just not committing to the disk

...When the program they write allows you to queue ripping different tracks from a DVD to the same file name.

...I waited three hours to rip a DVD, and it overwrote the same file six times. Fuck you, Handbrake.

When the damn thing doesn't work in "long" paths or paths with spaces in them.

THAT is why you're supposed to learn the keyboard shortcuts, but yeah, it's not exactly the best designed thing, at all. Seems to assume you run at a very high resolution. And it is a MAZE of buttons, I spend forever looking the the button for things without shortcuts, or atleast ones I don't know.

Aside, stupid devs, lets see, when they are working on a project, and they decide to add tons of new features instead of bug-fixing. FIX WHAT'S THERE FIRST DAMNIT! I like to thoroughly test anything and everything as soon as I write it, but maybe I'm just crazy.

You know the software developer is an idiot when he hard codes the "D:\" drive as the CD-ROM. I've seen so many old games and software do this.

what's worse, is all those install programs even today attempting to force itself onto C:\ even if you don't have a drive at that letter

Oh, and those installers that create shortcuts in your Start menu, quick launch, desktop etc without asking or ask for the name but don't have a "DON'T MAKE ANY &*%*&%&%" option, or even worse, reboot the system without asking (IE6) or with only a "k, rebooting now" message and no "DON'T FUCKING REBOOT" button (Visual Studio 6).

Even worse is the ones that will actually re-create these shortcuts if you delete them. I DO NOT NEED A FUCKING SHORTCUT TO NERO IN MY START MENU.

You know a software developer is an idiot when he thinks that disabling right click will prevent people from viewing the source code.

You know a software developer is an idiot when he makes a flash based interface for an administration panel and codes the database authentication info into the file.

You know a software developer is an idiot when he decides to create his own cross platform version of COM and then only primarily releases programs for Windows (I'm referring to America Online here).

You know a software developer is an idiot if he works for ATI... teheheh.

I could say something about this one.

Back in the day, when IE was still about the only browser used, no-right click was actually half-effective.

On disabling Right-click:

Yes, but then you coud just save the file to your HD and open it up in notepad. They tend to forget that in order to see the site, it has to reach your RAM, and from there it can be manipulated any way you feel like it if you know what you're doing.

Also, to restate my knee-jerk response, you know they're an idiot when they work for Sonic Team.

Disaled right-click can be worked around by...
  • View Source in the menu
  • view-source:www.google.ca
  • Retrieving the files from your cache
  • Saving the page and editing it in a text editor as Metal_Man88 pointed out
  • Disabling Javascript
  • Userscripts or Firefox extensions to re-enable it or prevent it being disabled (Firefox actually has a built-in option to prevent it, but for some reason it's off by default )
  • Filtering proxies like Proxomitron to dump the source and/or remove the nasty code
  • Many of the generic copypasta scripts don't work if you click both buttons at once
  • The ones that pop up a message box also tend to not work if you click as the box is closing
  • In Firefox, Page Info gives you a list of the URLs of all images, links, etc; Web Developer can show you this stuff too
  • For images, simply guessing at the directory the images are stored in; with n00bs using copypasta code it tends to be /images and have directory listing enabled
  • In IE (or Firefox using an extension), hovering over an image makes a floating toolbar pop up, from where you can save it (I used this one all the time when I was a n00b using IE )
  • Ctrl+U (thanks Setz)

Like most if not all forms of DRM, it doesn't work and is simply annoying.

Also, you know the developer is an idiot when they make a page that breaks the Back button. I'm not sure how they do it (I'm guessing Javascript redirects on load), but you click the button and it just goes back to the page again. Or one case I saw, you click it but somehow the previous page is replaced by the one you just came back from.

Or when they use DRM, in particular shitty forms like disabling right-click. But the decision to use DRM generally isn't the programmer's...

You know a software developer is an idiot when they call .pdf files "webpages".

You know a software developer is an idiot when they use the term "cyberspace".

You know a software developer is an idiot if they have 'Microsoft Frontpage' stuck in their meta tags.

It's like you know how much I hate frontpage...

It's caused me unending amounts of grief at my job, especially when I'm trying to clean frontpage messes instead of doing actual development.

Thank God for HTML Tidy, seriously saves a butt load of time.

A vintage one, on behalf of my moms:

If you code your program so it refuses to run on anything higher than 256 colors...

(Amazingly enough, they still use programs this old for work. And half the developers don't exist any more, and it's not like they're pumping out kid's software...)

When it installs itself in a place other than where you tell it to install.

Yes Microsoft, this one's directed at you and Windows XP.
Installed in J:\WINDOWS\ rather than C:\WINDOWS\.
And if anyone wants to know why J:\ is my second hard drive letter.. PM me.

I have a good reason to revive this thread...

When a company arranges an interview, but fails to provide any directions to their offices. They also fail to respond to e-mails and phone calls for the rest of the day. They also provide no contact information on their website. They also cannot be found in any yellow pages, or Google results. FAIL.

I withdrew my application.
