So yesterday I finally got around to playing Zelda again, which I haven't in ages... I got to where you have to fight a monster on horseback on a castle wall, and in the cutscene after I beat him I noticed these artifacts on the screen. At first I thought it was a crappy rain effect, but even afterward I could still see it, and it actually got quite a bit worse. They show up every time I play the game now. Excite Truck didn't appear to have them, but the music sometimes stutters, even MP3s (so it's not a disc problem), which didn't happen before. Has anyone else seen these?

Crappy pics of the artifacts. They're very noticeable when you look at a wall. They're mostly on the left, and don't move with the camera.

There's actually a rather big problem with Wiis about overheating. In Standby mode, the CPU still runs but the fan is off, and it's right next to the graphics components, so...

I wouldn't be suprised; you should call up N's support system and see what they say.

It's been known for months. A firmware update could possibly clear this up.

You'd think if someone has reported this before they'd fix this problem before allowing more shipments to other retailers.

Edit: This surprises me also, usually Microsoft and Sony are in a TOTAL RUSH to release something, therefore having so many bugs that the system isn't even recognizable afterwards.... I even bought the Gamecube when it first came out and nothing has gone wrong with it since.

Hello and welcome to all Nintendo. And even moreso, Sony and Microsoft.

I'm actually sorta surprised to hear this. Usually Nintendo is the one who builds their shit like tanks.

It's actually the first time I hear about this problem.

Then, considering what time on the year is... most overheating problems, no matter the hardware, tends to pop around this time of the year.

Yeah, it is hot in my room, but I wouldn't think it's hot enough to cause a problem. The system didn't feel unusually warm, and it starts as soon as the game loads (past all the menus and such once I'm actually in the game) even after sitting overnight. I've had it since about February. I'll have to call Nintendo tomorrow (hm, I could have sworn that line used to be 24 hours ) and see what they have to say. I'm reeeeally hoping it's a combination bug in the game and shitty new SD card. :-/

*Turns off standby mode* hopefully it didn't do any damage. I've heard that there are fans that hook on to your Wii to keep it cool (the only problem is that the fan is supposed to be pretty loud).

I wouldn't be surprised if everyone's quality control has gone down the tubes. Been involved with video games since 1991. So having tested many different consoles and their accessories, I wholeheartedly consider the pack-in GameCube controller the single least reliable piece of gaming hardware I've ever encountered.

Nah... all of mine still work.. the least reliable were launch third party GC controllers.. darn those broke fast... second least reliable were the pack ins thought... but the gamecube itself is VERY strong. it can take sledgehammers and still work =P (thank you TV for that moment where both the PS2 and Xbox failed)

The Wii tends to get warm when WiiConnect24 is turned on (orange light in standby mode, instead of red). I dunno if that'd cause anything majorly bad, but you could try turning it off.

Two ways to fix Overheating:
1. Unplug for about two minutes.
2. Turn the damn system on for a while.

Also, the horizontal setup is more likely to overheat, so use vertical if you can.

I actually had left mine on standby for months and it was fine. No artifacts. But now with all the internet bullshit I just put the WiiConnect24 to off when it is not turned on and on when it is.

Its been said though that it's not the GPU next to the CPU thats the main issue, its outside sources too (the room being too hot contributes majorly). Most people who have talked about the issue have a hot house/room so most of the internet has come to the conclusion it is not entirely Nintendo's fault.

There are. I saw one at GameStop last week.

Speaking about fans, there are plenty of custom cases you can buy now with plenty of open holes and some with fans included.

I'd say the PS2 (especially first run) was way worse.

I've had this very same problem twice and intend to head over to Nintendo to get my second Wii replaced rather soon. A friend of mine has had the same issue, too. I know a Nintendo phone rep who says that this problem is actually not all that common; since the system's launch, he's only had 4 calls about it. I'm not really that enthusiastic, however; I expect that my third Wii will eventually come down with the very same problem. And no, it's not due to the outside conditions being too hot, as the temperature's been quite cool and the problems wound up occurring in two different places (one at home, one in the dorms a state away).

HyperHacker: Give Nintendo a call and get them to send you a new system. As far as I know, the problem won't go away on its own, unfortunately. It'll just get worse and worse over time.

Why, hello, I'm NetSplit's said friend with said issue.

Mine's not entirely similar in that it usually manifests itself as white dots along the edges of some polygons, or as scattered pixels in the Wii Home menu. In some games (like Elebits), it doesn't seem to show up at all.

I've already bought a cooling fan (and hacked it to use a quieter 12v blue LED fan ) to keep my current Wii from getting worse, and to hopefully prevent my new Wii from overheating at all.
