Cellphones are nice, y'know? Yeah. Lovely little gadgets.

That is, they would be if some idiot wasn't handing out your cell number like it's going out of style down in Tampa.

Guess how many "wrong numbers" I've been getting for this Chris dude?

Go on, guess.

Ready?

40. In the last month. All from different numbers.

Isn't that just peachy? My latest call was, get this, at 1:30 in the morning on a night where I barely even had a chance to sleep anyway. The content of the call was this:

(phone rings)
Me: *wakes up, reaches over, and picks it up* ...Hello?
Person: ...
Me: ...
Person: ... *click*
Me: ... *BERSERKER MODE*

I looked up the offending number. It would be forgivable if the call was from Squall Leonheart; that dude seems incapable of making a full sentence without using an ellipses. But it wasn't, and in fact, the number doesn't even have a name registered to it. I'm guessing it was a city tollbooth or something.

My detective's instinct is starting to wonder if my phone number is not just being handed out, but perhaps that some retard scribbled it down on a bathroom wall somewhere. And if I track that person down, his life will be cut severely short for the least decent of reasons.

Just out of curiosity, any of you have similar experiences?

This is where you get your number changed. I was getting a lot of calls from a restricted number that were simply a few seconds of nothing, and it happened almost every day for a very long time (often at 8AM. God damn, I go to college; I need to sleep). Sometimes I'd get voicemails from the number asking me to call some 1-800 number for some business opportunity from some place I couldn't even find on Google. And sometimes I'd just get a few seconds of static before the call ended. Wasn't even always from a restricted number! Well, anyway, I called my service provider and got my number changed. It was really easy, and something I shoulda done a month prior. Do it. Do it now.

I actually have been considering that for a while, but if I did that I would have to track down every person who has my number to update them. That's no easy feat, considering that I use my phone in lieu of a land line(my dad uses the land line all the time). So I'd also have to go around and alter any job applications that are still, for the sake of being there, considered "active".

Of course, I may just stop giving a damn altogether and change it anyway, since this has been a huge waste of my time and sleep cycle.

I could also just start keeping my phone off during times when I don't want calls, but I leave it on with the strict reasoning that some of my friends are somewhat mentally unstable and do need a friend to talk to such as myself sometimes to keep from going over the edge.

Yeah, I had this a while ago after someone wrote down my mobile number on a notice board in a city 34 miles away from where I live, next to something along the lines of "call for free blowjob".

whocalled.us is where I usually turn when I don't recognize the number of who's calling my cell. There are a lot of illegal Spanish people in my area, and they usually don't get land lines, so they stick with cell phones. Thus, Spanish telemarketing appears on our cells. Doesn't happen to me a whole lot, but it happened to a lot of people when I was in high school.

Something similar is happening to me. It's too bad my grandma calls from 800 numbers, or I'd ignore them entirely. As a solution, the next telemarketer to call gets an earful of cordless phone feedback. This is gonna be fun.

Yeah some mexican guy called me 10 times in a row once. He didn't say anything, but I could hear whoever was with him speaking in Spanish. I called HIM and told him to stop calling me, and he claimed "oh I got the wrong number". Okay, but TEN TIMES? I got a few more calls from him. If the number didn't work the first time, why would it work the 12th time?

At one point this person I've never heard of with an unlisted number kept calling my cell phone, asking for me. When I told them it was me, they just insisted it wasn't and hung up. I figure they managed to get my number mixed up with someone else's who had the same name, but I dunno where they'd have got it.

The only people who are calling me are ones I know.

You aren't on my ID, it's straight to the voicemail. I screen calls all the time.

I'm so glad I don't have a cell yet. I'd hand it out to everyone. Then some idiot will start prank calling me... =/

Every few weeks, I'll get a call that is nothing but a Spanish recording. It's the same recording every time, but it always comes from different numbers. I don't know what it says because I don't speak Spanish.

I used to get a lot of collection calls for some idiot back when I first got my number. It really sucked because I could never get through to the company that was calling me, as they only left a number and an extension on my voice mail (EARLY in the morning), and the number used an automated menu system with no options to put in an extension...

Lately, though, I've been getting calls for "Frank"...lots of them. So many, in fact, that I was forced to add "if you're looking for Frank, YOU HAVE THE WRONG NUMBER!@#$%" to my voice mail greeting. It seems to be working.

I have a mobile phone but I barely use it. I have it because it's way cheaper than a landline (which is like $62 a month around here). I rarely get wrong numbers, but once I got several at night and it woke my dad up (but not me).

The screen on my phone is cracked, and the top 5/6 is unreadable (just blue and yello), and the bottom is glitchy.

Oddly, it works perfectly otherwise.

40. In the last month. All from different numbers.
You could always try asking the telco to assign you a new number due to "excessive harassment"

That's better than the wrong numbers someone on my floor was getting freshman year. They were along the lines of "pay us back our money or you're gonna get it". So, whoever they were trying to call was probably kinda fucked.

Bleah this reminds me of this one guy I know saying that if I didn't do some crap for him he'd post something on myspace telling people to call my number for gay sex. No calls though, assuming it was an empty threat. And what is it with getting wrong numbers from spanish-speaking people? A friend of mine keeps getting spanish telemarketing calls, people trying to sell him clocks.

That sounds pretty bad, but I think you could try to activate the divert calls feature

Or, if your cellphone running on an OS, there are actually plenty of call blocking software around
