Here come a stream of random shots:
Heaven forfuckingfend we get an overkill of book reading! HAY IT'S NOT GOOD TO BE HOLED UP IN THAT ROOM READING BOOKS ALL DAY! Hell, ain't that most RPGs? Not my fault there isn't anything good on TV these days. In all seriousness, I guess we're all mentally disordered. Guess now we can claim disability. |

The addictions they list here are people who put this over other more realistic needs, sure we have a slight addiction to games, but not as serious as this. These people haven't showered for weeks... That stench must really fowl up the room they keep themselves locked up in. For addicts like me, we know our limits, we still do things required of us, then shortly afterwards ruin our eyes with the loveable lasers of amusement.
Although if this did become a mental problem, does that mean I would have to go to the asylum or get insurance money? ____________________ Happiness is an internet without the idiocy. Z-bot pic a la Peardian |

Oh, so these are like the people in korea that play starcraft 52 hours straight, or the people who play WOW and live off of cheetos.

Yeah, I actually read this article, and a few ones similar to it. It seems legitimate in many of the extreme cases mentioned. When you let your infant baby starve to death because you're too busy playing World of Warcraft, I'd say there's a mental problem involved.
Why is it always World of Warcraft though? |

No Alastor, no. I read the article start to finish. I completely agree with you in that such a thing exists. This article does represent that fact no question and I'm not saying that such a thing doesn't exist. I'm just saying WE ALREADY DAMN WELL KNOW AND HAVE FOR A LOOOONG ASS TIME THANKS!
I don't need any more of these statistics flooding my reading material given day-by-day telling me something I don't already know. Great to know what we're researching psychologically these days but at the same time it's nothing new. The way I take it is another venue that someone's going to use against the community as a whole (ala Tack Jhompson) and do something stupid with it. You can get addicted to practically anything and have negative effects on it. Anything. Tell me something I don't know, please. Like I said, the next thing you know it really will be a disability if we get too out-of-hand with it. Why do you think parents ground their kids from the vid games only to see their grades improve usually? I mean tell me something the PARENTS don't already know (at least those responsible)... |

Posted by Alastor Well, a professional swimmer can get addicted to swimming, a professional football player to football... the human brain can react with certain chemicals to things it enjoys and practically get addicted to anything. Just that some addictions (such as to sports or exercise) are usually more beneficial than excessive video game playing. And often have physical limitations keeping them under control. |

Actually, I did read this story once about a rich guy who practically ruined his life and the lives of those around him because he was obsessed with trying to buy every book ever made.
I can't remember the name of the person though... it was from an earlier century. |

People can get hooked on anything. ANYTHING.
It's just the extent and severity of the addiction that's the problem; video games seem to get it worst. |

Why the fuck would you create a thread like this? WE ARE ALL GAMERS HERE. If you don't like games or people that play games then LEAVE. Yes, people can get addicted to games, just like anything else in this world. Most of us here probably ARE addicted the games. I know I am. And you know what? I like that I am addicted to games. I hope I always stay addicted the games.
I have lost and gotten jobs because of games. I have made and lost friends because of games. That's fucking life. If your not addicted to this, its that. Live with it. And stop posting crap we all already know about. |

Posted by Alastor The difference between alcohol and video games of course being that if you drink an extreme amount of alcohol due to addiction you could actually die from simply stopping or trying to solve the problem yourself. Though of course I agree that it is possible to get addicted to games and well, any rewarding activity because this is something we already know. I would like to quote the article though.

Posted by AlexAR Okay, first, I didn't agree with that article from the beginning. I'm a gamer too. Read my post, and you'll see "WTF..." Obviously showing I don't agree with it. Now I kinda agree, people can get addicted to video games. ____________________ D: Can't think of anything original.... |
