Mmmmhmmmhmmm, oh well I wasn't planning to move to UK anytime soon.

From what it seems, it won't be banned in Sweden. Banning it would probably just leading to more drama here actually, or at least I hope that.

Hey, I live in Australia.

Games that would get an R18+ (Equivalent to your AO I guess) are denied sale, regardless of what Ninty or Sony would say about it. Kinda stupid considering we have R18 movies, but... ;

So...I guess I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Nintendo's always had a "no AO game" policy, apparently. And Sony has the same one apparently, so nobody should go off on the "Wii is a kiddy system!!!" trolling like I saw on Kotaku today until the news broke that Sony said the same thing. They'll gladly publish the game if it's M rated, but that's about it.
I don't see the reasoning behind a "You can't publish game X" rule. I guess that's what happens when developers can lockdown a system so that it only does what they want it to do -- technically a form of DRM nobody really cares about (go figure).

It might just be me, but I don't get it -- isn't the whole idea of an "AO" rating, that a game cannot be bought by minors? The console cos should just allow all non-copyright-infringing, non-pirated, etc games to be published. The lack of support retail should cause developers to look for ways to reduce the rating as it is, without denying us outright if a publisher decides to publish an AO-game.

In the event that some activist group calls out GeneriConsoleCo, they can just say that "The sale and restriction of these games is not our problem; retailers and parents should ensure that AO-rated games are not being sold or played by minors."

But, you know, nobody has any balls anymore and is willing to just bend over and take what they get.

I'm not surprised, from what I've read, that game is incredibly gory. GTA was already on the edge, and this game just happened to take it too far. More Jack Thompson bait if you ask me.

Anyway, God of War is different because it's fantasy. Completely fictional without much linking it to reality. However, manhunt (apparently) contains extremely realistic realism.

Either way, I wouldn't buy this game anyway.

You won't see many companies willing to sell/publish games/movies/books that are given AO titles. Wal-mart certainly wouldn't carry it, and I have my doubts about EB Games carrying it.

Out right banning it seems silly, but Nintendo certainly doesn't have to approve the game or license it. It is a private company after all.

"HEY GUYS LETS MAKE DECISIONS ON WHATS GOOD FOR YOU"

I am fucking disappointed in both Nintendo and Sony. In some way, this offends me.

I kind of understand Nintendo being afraid, because despite all the adulterated things before, this game has both realish violent things, and the ability to actually act them out semirealistically, though personally, I feel it would make a good stress reliever.

Negative media attention (sadly) and the fact that stores will not stock the game. I've never seen AO games in stores... aside from one game (gambling), the rest are porn games or have porn elements in them. I guess beating off on a dead body goes into that category.

Well, that's what they have to do. Either they have to delay the game and change it around to tone it down to M standards (and I'm sure the ESRB would tell them what they wanted out) or they have to can the game.

For some reason, M = not for minors. AO = stigma attached to game that's hard to wipe off. It's the closest weapon the ESRB has to ban a game, basically.

The *only* other option I could see is to release the game on the PC...

They might as well go PC then, because with all the violent and twisted elements this game has.. I can't see them being able to tone it down to an M rating without completely redoing major aspects of the game. (Which would ultimately butcher whatever they're going for with this game..)

It is also pretty amusing, because I never would have acknowledged this game or even knew what it was about if they hadn't made all this negative media coverage about it. I'm actually a little curious about the game now, where as I probably never would have touched it before.. It seems like like all this effort is more counter productive than anything else..

You and probably far too many others who haven't ever heard of it.

Now you can thank media coverage for wanting more kids to have the game than they did before the ESRB made a fuss about it. Totally awesome.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a favor.. The whole thing is more easily summed up as a pile of nonsensical bullshit, really.

i don't really get what everyone's so upset about. sony and nintendo are both video game console designers who don't want the press of games that are vile and heinous. at this point, rockstar is just making ridiculous games just for the press. just look at... say.. this whole thread! a large amount of you would have never heard of it until they made this thread. rockstar is a company, and they are after money. banning these games from their consoles is just to keep rockstar down. games already have a bad enough reputation for making gamers crazy.. and the way you guys are responding to it proves that exactly(i can't rape people in a video game now?? this is horrible!). besides, it's not like rockstar is doing anything progressive. this isn't like black rights movements of feminist movements, it's a game where you rape and murder people.

BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Seriously. Its a smart move, on both their parts. I don't think either nintendo or Sony wants to have the reuptation from angry soccer mom's. They're not trying to play nanny or whatever. Its called saving your ass. the oldnet or whatever the fuck you guys call technology-illiterate people aren't going to go after the company that made the game, if they're upset with it. Nope. If its on a Nintendo System, they're going to go after them first and foremost. Same thing if its sony.
Also, do you realize what would happen if they let out an AO rated game and actaully managed to put it out places? Sales would plummet due to overreacting parents and among other things.

Besides.... its a game with over-the-top violence and gore for the sake of it. Remind me why that's fun, again? Oh wait, it isn't except if you're some kind of retarded kid who thinks they're hardcore for playing it. You know, the kind of mindset that is, in your guys words "Bringing about the downfall of vidja gaym." I don't think many of you guys would even -play- it and you're pissed off.

Its called saving your ass, people. You need to do that in the world of business.

I had seen my cousin play GTA before, but it seems quite boring to me except for the fact you could freely do a lot of thing in the city

but, I was pretty shock that this new game was that violent... although it was a game, it will pretty sure affect lots of kids these days

I do see a point from the move; banning the whole game from the country could prevent a lot of kids playing it, except for those that download it through the internet though

I wouldn't wanna see kids playing these games while I go to CC (cybercafe)...

I understand businesses saving their ass...because that's why everyone's jumping ship after that announcement but here's a problem:

It's called people running the lives of others and submitting to what little rights we're getting these days. It's called limiting options to those that are available. And for the hell of it...it's bullshit really. For every game that's ever made, someone is interested in it. Maybe not me, maybe not anyone here, but someone does. Obvious case because it wouldn't have been made otherwise if it didn't appeal to the people that already made it. Outright killing a game to have a chance, even if posed with extremes, doesn't really help. But I guess it's the job to pioneer how far on that line people can take gaming before they crack and go B&!

Besides, a freaking crazed person, as portrayed in this game, isn't going to go overboard on stuff like that? Touch of reality a bit too much for people these days? If you don't like that, don't buy it. Simple as that really. And for those that aren't mature enough to play something like this, that is common sense and I would agree that I wouldn't want a kid who can't handle something like this to do as such. Only problem is that limits the rest of the world to that fact.

I wasn't saying there was a downfall of video games whatsoever. I was just stating that there's a lot more on this crap nowadays then there was a while ago. Godforbid if we ever get Resident Evil too real for people when the PS5 rolls around and it's as high as the Final Fantasy series in terms of games.

Waitwaitwait... You're suggesting the AO rating and bans in England are new? They've been around since the advent of the respective rating systems... Only difference is, people suddenly consider them to be worth reporting on now.

Moreover, this whole thread is silly. The company already announced that they're toning the game down in order to get the desired M-rating and corresponding 17+ (I think that's the appropriate British one?).

So wait, people are complaining about being limited in choice by Nintendo/Sony who is using their choice/right to not license games they find "too much"?
