I've been looking though What Used To Be more, and I found some old logs. Notably, an ACS readout:

[14:02] -MillyBot- [ACS] - Total posts: 638  1.Thoughtless 92  2.gamefreak19 90  3.Anya 76  4.LizardKing Sr 34  5.Fyxe 33  6.Dejan Guardian 24  7.Waddler-D 22  8.Colin 20  9.MajinBlueDragon 17  10.Xkeeper 15  31.Acmlm 3

It brings back many memories of what it was like back in 2003 (May, if you're curious)... how different everything was.

Reading through old #romhacking logs too (back before it became #rom-hacking and moved off irc.emunet.org or whatever). Vagla was active, people like Xcomgs were around, Challenge Games was still alive (albeit not terribly active), DharkDaiz was working on Mario Seasons (up to 1-2 and frustrated, I sense), solid t-boner was still contemplating where TEK was going...

Meh, there's no real point to this thread. I'm just stuck in the past again, wondering what it would be like to go back and watch it again, to know what I was thinking and feeling, to know why. To try and figure out why the "bad things" occured, and fix them. (That and wanting to smack myself )

I suppose that past all this, it's just a silly few lines of text and meaningless in the grand scheme... but it's just more memories that are lost and only remembered though occasional landmarks.

Sometimes, though, I wonder if the path we collectively chose was a good idea, or bad. But then the realization sets in, that it doesn't matter either way -- there is nothing we could do now.

Looking back at myself is a strange feeling. Even compared to a year ago, I have matured considerably, yet still have a long way to go. Looking further back is more painful, and I apologize for how utterly moronical I was back then. I should've known better... But it is too late for this now.

[06:02:53] Dr. Sophie says: Nostalgic feelings are strange, awesome and sad altogether, at least for me (and my nostalgic memories)
[06:02:59] Xkeeper says: Yes
[06:03:15] Xkeeper says: That describes it rather perfectly... strange, in that they do not feel normal
[06:03:20] Xkeeper says: awesome, in that they are fun to remember
[06:03:28] Xkeeper says: and sad, in knowing that they are the past
[06:08:28] Dr. Sophie says: Yeah, it's also sad because I know for certain that those times cannot be reproduced again, no matter how hard one can try.. But yeah, it's a weird feeling indeed. Both positive and negative..
That makes me think about one question I can't give an answer to - Is it a good thing lurking in the past for a long time, or not
[06:09:07] Xkeeper says: Sometimes, it is both
[06:13:14] Xkeeper says: Sometimes you will regret not speaking when you have the chance
[06:13:21] Xkeeper says: Sometimes you will regret ever opening your mouth
[06:13:35] Dr. Sophie says: That's so true.
[06:14:00] Xkeeper says: Although now it is more of a realization, that in a case where all outcomes are unknown, it is usually better to try and say something than stand and do nothing
[06:14:08] Xkeeper says: because if that is what we all did, there would be nothing left of us.

I suppose that the overall point of this thread, is that there is no point. It is just silly memories, occasionally cropping up in the sands of the void.

While the past is interesting, I guess it's time to look forward again. I cannot undo what I have done, and unfortunately many people I clashed with are no longer around for me to apologize to. I had realized my mistake once before -- withholding my true thoughts to someone, silently ignoring them and trying to not think about it -- but I realized that I would get nowhere, and possibly alienate myself from another person.

I have already lost many friends and people I cared about due to my actions, or inactions. I wish I could say that I would change easily, by simply not going down that road that would lead to regrets, but I do not believe it is that simple.

[06:20:16] Dr. Sophie says: It's funny, it's reminding me so much of myself, being so afraid of making mistakes.. although I know how wrong I am with this behavior of mine, I can't overcome it.. (yet? who knows)
[06:20:37] Xkeeper says: You can. It is hard, but you can.
[06:21:05] Xkeeper says: Sometimes, you have to ask yourself, "why am I holding myself back?"
[06:21:23] Xkeeper says: And then wonder, are these reasons valid? Am I really holding myself back, because it will better myself?
[06:21:58] Xkeeper says: Sometimes you have to start small. Expressing a small opinion here, or there. Realizing that not everything will work out perfectly, and not being afraid to try.
[06:22:22] Xkeeper says: Although, admittedly, it is odd hearing myself say this. I suffer from the same problem... it is not easy to overcome, by any means...
[06:23:39] Dr. Sophie says: .. Because, and it's funny that I *STILL* haven't learned from myself because I'm saying this to my friends over and over and over again.. doing something wrong is the only way to learn from it and thus to become better, right?
[06:24:14] Xkeeper says: No. Sometimes, it is better to learn from other's mistakes. Although it can be difficult to overcome this... ...
[06:24:34] Xkeeper says: Sometimes you must think ahead. Will you regret never talking, just hiding? Or will you take chances, and see what happens?

I can only hope that I can change. I can try, but I do not know if I will succeed.

I apologize for my actions in the past. But I hope that in the future, I can learn from my mistakes and not make them again. It will be difficult, I am sure... but I must at least try. To not is to fail, but to at least try means that it is mearly non-success.

Occasionally there are times where my thinking somehow penetrates my usual one-track, hasty thinking patterns. Sometimes, I am thrown into a world I don't know, where this kind of thinking is common. The occurance is very rare, and often it is wasted. I do not believe I have written like this for a long time, if ever... What I say can confuse even me, and I am sure that in a few months I will look back and wonder what I was doing, and what I was thinking.

I wish I had words to describe my feelings more accurately. Increasingly as the night goes on, I can feel myself falling deeper into whatever this is. It's strange. ........

....

Interesting...I've been looking through the first archive lately. I wish I had kept logs from IRC in 2003 though. And sometimes I think about what would have happened if something went differently. Like if when the second incarnation started, they actually thought about staff rather than basically promoting everyone with any power on the old board to admin...

I was a world-class dumbass when I first came here in 2002. I was relatively new to boards, but sometimes I want to go back in time and smack myself. Hard.

The only thing i have to look back on is the board which i joined back in maybe 2004 sometime... I really don't remember but i can't understand that it was me back then. And for those that might think of me as an idiot then you would go apeshit over my posts back then. And even tough i have been here for almost three years i still haven't become that much better at posting... Good thing i'm mostly a lurker.

I used to be focused on ROM hacking, then branched into other things. A wiki, etc. I've been lurking more lately too. Amazing how different it was in 2001-2003, when some users had well over 10,000 posts. I may not be the most well-liked around here, but unlike many people I'll admit things like the inability to code or program.

I was an utter n00b in 2003. "lol, I wrote some BASIC code in Notepad and renamed it to .exe, why doesn't it work?" Well that might have been as far back as 2001, but anyway...

And I remember that you were 100% sure that it was impossible to obtain mew in the original pokémon.

I also remember being rather upset for people calling me a idiot for posting that thread.

I also realized how some people really are afterwards too. Some people I used to hate, is people that I find rather cool now. And there's the people I used to almost worship, while now I look back I find myself... manipulated. I'm not gonna name anyone though.

I had something similar about my past, I was a hardcore idiot back when I was a little kid, and I sometimes hate remembering the bad things that sometimes happened because of my behavior. Thankfully, I've matured too, and I changed kind of a lot, but I still am prone to my trademark overreactions.

Anyway, as bad as some of my memories are, I do have good memories of my past, too. I used to play with my k'nex when I was grounded from using my computer, and I'd build the models in the book. Namely, a large ferris wheel, and a merry-go-round.

In my past, I used to visit oldschool bluemountain.com a lot, and I remember the songs in some of the e-cards there. Luckily, archive.org had my favorites, and I was able to download them. The only thing missing was that familiar FM midi synth that almost every windows 95 machine used. I wrote a winamp plugin which plays midis using this sound, but I don't want to publically release it, because I used code from MAME (namely, the opl3 emulator), and I haven't fully complied with the license yet.

Anyway, I dunno if anyone knows, but I'm sometimes obsessed with The Incredible Machine. That's because I played it all the time when I was a little kid, and I have good memories from it. I dunno, in a way, we all like returning to the past every once in a while. I mean, that's why we have emulators, and dosbox and stuff.

Yeah, I remember when the N64 was revolutionary and stuff, and wavetable midi was awesome, and blah blah. Nowadays, it's "ehh no big deal", because everything is capable of 3d now. There's really not much left for anything... growing up in this current age isn't really all that great, all of the excitement happened in the 90s.

Anyway, despite how remembering my bad memories brings pain, I wouldn't change it. I mean, everything that happened in the past made me who I am right now, and I like who I am now, so thus, I don't want to change my past at all.

Everything was so charming back then...

Anyway, I think every human alive likes staying in the age where they grew up. I mean, look at your parents. They probably listen to oldies, and they probably aren't hardcore computer people. I also haven't really seen any older people who like playing Gamecube all the time. That's how we probably will be. We all are most likely going to stick with what we grew up with.

No, just that the posted method was bogus, since I couldn't understand its poor grammar. (Menu just popping up for no reason as you wander around vs popping up when you enter a new area.)

Maybe, it's been too long since I checked what I posted back then.

Though people should have at least tried it out since some people got it working. >> And I remember recording it on TV through pokémon stadium. xD

...I have no idea where that tape is though.

Well, hey, it is true. Then again the layout you used back then (the 3-image "GAMEFREAK19" one) was pretty ugly too 8)

Well, it was replaced by a layout rather shortly. It wasn't around for too long.

There are quite a few things about the past that I wish I could revisit. Once in a while I'll go on a retro game downloading binge. Actually, I just completed Sam and Max Hit the Road last night. It's a great game, but I could never beat it when I was a little kid. One general thing I miss from back then is that we didn't look up walkthroughs and FAQs nearly as often. There was more of a willingness to figure things out by myself. Whereas now, whenever my little brother has the tiniest question about his Pokemon Pearl game he begs me to look it up.

As far as this board in particular goes, I have rather conflicting feelings. I wish I had been more active back in the older incarnations, but I also wish that I had been more mature when I did post. Ah well, I'm here now, and since I haven't packed up and left yet, I'll probably be here to stay for quite a while.

Err... Sorry if I hijacked your thread, Xk.
