Well maybe I should have kept the four-power-loss-a-hit into level 4 instead of level 6 like the original Castlevania. The biggest complaints about the game so far has been the difficulty curve.

The difficulty isn't any less than I'd expect from Castlevania, nor does difficulty curve really matter that much. The differences aren't that great. The things I dislike about classic Castlevania is that in many places you are going to die A LOT until you memorize the map layout, which of course drives me to just use savestates a lot.

But I'll agree, Slogra was the most difficult boss.

I only made it to Olrox's level so far but I like what i see. The new music makes it feel alot different. Some of it is a bit catchy. It's good that optomon saw your talent Dr Mario, cause u guys make a good pair. U guys should tackle another project together, if u can find another game worth hacking. Hopefully a Castlevania one.

Well, it was Dr. Mario who noticed my talent and invited me to the project really, and I joined without hesitation after seeing tthe graphical enhancements he had done on the stages and the enemies. I'm not sure if I'm going to be so quick to take on another project, I'd really like to further upgrade my knowledge of programming first.

And Dr. Mario, I highly recommend updating the Chorus of Mysteries site, especially the screenshots. You have screenshots that were taken before I was apart of the project!!

That made me laugh, mainly because of how true it is. I really need to get on that.

Just downloaded this (it's the Program 1 ROM, in case anyone is having trouble) and I love the graphics and new music!

The game itself is harder than the original, and playing with a keyboard, I'm utterly hopeless -- took many tries just to get past stage 1 and was very thankful for the extra life that you placed there. (Having become used to the tighter control of the GBA Castlevanias, I'd almost forgotten how tough this game was.)

Finally reached the bat boss on stage 3 and he doesn't seem to line up for your axe throws like the original one did. He got the best of me and I haven't tried again yet.

Where did the new music come from? Stage 1 to 3 sounds pretty familiar, but I can't place it.

The new music is completely original, except Dance of Pales.

There will be a second release. Basically, all I'm going to do is make level 2 easier and restore 4 power loss to level 5. I will also remove a few glitches and move a couple of candles around maybe and that's it.

You know what really angers me? That this hack is getting so much flak for the difficulty, if anyone even comments on it at all.

Hey, maybe if you do some craptastic bug ridden Super Metroid or LttP hack people would give a damn!

Anyway, this hack is definitely an example of what ROM hacking can accomplish when done by skilled and talented hackers. Something which seems to be in short supply these days *cough cough*.

Once again, nice job, and I look forward to any revisions/other hacks you two may do.

I don't know about you, but in general LttP and SM are younger, more well-known series (and overall, more fun; I can't enjoy Castlevania at all, your milage may vary).

Much like the overgrowth of SMB1 hacks, the occasional gem does not cause a lot of talking.

Maybe you should point out to those people whining about difficulty that you put a new item in the game that makes you invincible whenever you want. I don't know about you guys, but when I can beat a game in one sitting without really putting any effort into it, it really devalues beating the game. Have you ever heard someone brag about beating a retard in checkers? Because thats how easy most games I've played these days are.

I finally got around to playing this game and I'm up to slogra. I love how so many of the enemies and bosses in here aren't just graphical hacks.

I thought the first level was a little bit *too* reminiscent structure-wise of the original, however the second and third didn't feel similar at all. Another thing was I felt the colors were too tame (? dunno if thats the word I was looking for - everythign just seemed monochrome and tinted to one thing or another, with little variation in the actual ramps)

I also liked how you could off orlox's head. I too felt they should've allowed you to break things other than the occasional wall

fun shit.

One more thing to note. this post is really unorganized and I don't feel like fixing it.

Great music, graphics, and a level design that keeps me on edge. I'm currently in level 3 fighting Slogra. Great work, gentlemen!

Younger... more well known?
Are you on crack? LttP and SM:M3 (that's the correct title) are both about the same age as Castlevania as a series and as individual games. And they're not much more well known either. Most people I know that remember Zelda and Metroid also remember Castlevania, Megaman, and even Kid Icarus equally as well.

Super Metroid is only Super Metroid. I have yet to see anything referring to it as "Super Metroid: Metroid 3". In fact, the only time the Metroid 3 title even appeared was in the game's intro.

Not to disparage any work done on this, but I'm not huge on the original few Castlevania games and am unlikely to play. It looks awesome, though.

Xkeeper's not on crack, I think he meant as individual games they were younger. Castlevania came out in 1987 while Lttp and SM are from 1991 and 1994 respectively (I think). The point I think he was trying to make was that the Castlevania series is not quite as popular as those of these two games and I agree, and thus Castlevania hacks might not get noticed as much. However, to say whether one is more fun than the other is more a matter of opinion.

I agree with that.
It just seems strange that anyone would call those younger as Super Castlevania IV came out about the same time as those two mentioned.
Sorry if I was alittle harsh in my reaction.

BTW. Super Metroid's own title sequence says implicitly that Nintendo is presenting Metroid 3. The whole "super" thing seem like an obvious marketting strategy.

If a game isn't fun than it isn't worth playing no matter how pretty it looks.

No one cares and this ain't the debate forum, end of argument, kthx.

I'll get it when I get home; I've been following it off and on for the time that you started but haven't really said anything about it for lack of anything really intelligent to add to it. Sounds like it's already attracted a heck of a lot of attention so I can't imagine it to be that bad if it so is.

This hack is really great, a superb achievement. Alas, the game hangs up completely just as I try to go past the first green flower thingy, in the first level, second screen. It's probably because my original copy of Castlevania is corrupted...

Are you sure that is not the second level? If so, it's the second time someone's made that complaint. It may have to do with the emulator it is running on.
