Need someone with a bit of knowledge here.

On a whim, I decided to reget ePSXe 1.5.2 the other night because I was wanting to get a certain Xenogears ISO that I burnt from a friend's CD (even before coming to Ace's) running fully. At the time I burnt it, I didn't have a card that would run 32-bit transparency, which is a downer considering that the intro sequence at the start of the game pretty much requires it.

Well, I got it running (a bit slow on the intro sequence behalf, but runnable on my specs) but I have one little annoyance that may spread to something else in the game. At the title screen, for those that know the game, when you press start when it shows the 'XENOGEARS - 1998 Square' screen, the fade has issues. I took care of most of the transparency issue by disabling Mask Bit in the renderer but it still has a problem with displaying the area on pushing START. The back is only supposed to fade somewhat and it fades -completely- when it shows New Game, Continue Game and Sound menu. There should be a darkened version of the Xenogears splash in the background and there just isn't anything.

Now I know that's nitpicky, but that's a sign that another transparency like this might exist later in the game where I really need that transparency fixed and that would suck. Maybe there isn't, I don't know. I've never had the chance to beat the game.

Is it something I've got wrong in the emulator I've selected? The graphics renderer? The game burn itself? My comp itself even after getting a card that should be more than enough to render the game?

Using:

ePSXe 1.5.2 (heard 1.60, etc. sucked)
Graphics renderer: Pete's GPU OpenGL 1.7.6
CDROM renderer: sAPU's CDR 1.00
Sound renderer: Spu Eternal 1.41

Running it off of:
Windows 2000 Pro SP4
1.0 GHz PIII (yea, it's not fast, but I'm not worried about speed at this point)
192 MB RAM
256 MB RADEON STEALTH 9250 PCI card

Just lemme know if someone can help me with this. There happens to be another matter that I worry of because of this that I'm slowly getting with my 56K and I just want to make sure that I have all my ducks in a row for it. Anything you guys can help with would be appreciated.

I would try pete's directx plugins, they've always seemed to work the fastest for me on any PC. All I can say is fuck with all the options of the plugin, try any plugin you can find, and you might want to give ePSXe 1.6 a chance

and if all else fails check out pSX; you don't have to spend time dicking with plugins with that. Its fairly new, but a really good emulator.

I could need that PSX emulator too. My games are run way too fast on the ePSXe. Frame rate is fucked and whatever. Sound is kinda bad.

The DirectX version ran slower; same with the software version of the plugin.
1.6.0 ran like crap.

I -did- conveniently- forget that there was pSX, thanks for reminding me. That's something I'll need to try.

There a comparable plugin in to Pete's GPU?

EDIT: Traps, there's a frame limit in the GPU plugin. You know that, right?

Hm, I guess openGL just runs better for you because you actually have a video card

CD-ROM and sound plugins shouldn't affect it, and if you can't fix it with the in-game menu (hit insert or delete or one of those keys, I forget which now), then check game-specific cixes in the video plugin config menu, and if its not in there I'd say just check out other plugins or google search for solutions :\

It might just be me, but pSX seemed a little bit slower (at least it couldn't speed up near as much as ePSXe), so I'd try to get ePSXe working first.

Here's the kicker, pSX runs it great but it doesn't have the ability to run OpenGL support -nearly- as good as ePSXe. In fact, I think it's all software-based in pSX because it runs like crap on my specs.

I've tried everything with ePSXe. Nothing fixes that bug with Pete's GPU. :\

EDIT: Did some digging with Google. Pete's OpenGL2 did the trick.

ah, Only thing I can think of then is to try other plugins, or keep it around until you eventually get a new PC =P

So good luck with that

Finally got it working 100% on ePSXe. Man I did a lot with this damned thing in about 7 or 8 man-hours of fscking with it. God am I tired.

Ended up with:

GPU: P.E.Op.S Soft Driver 1.17 (Built from Pete's GPU code, now open source) - Made it run far more smooth than I could have hoped. There's still a few discrepancies every so often but it's a -lot- better than it was. OpenGL2 did better than OpenGL but it wasn't enough to get it down to a fast enough rate. This one did this trick.

SPU: Remained on Eternal SPU but changed a few things around by using SPUasync.

CD: Nothing changed.

Learned quite a bit about this unwillingly.

yeah, and this is why pSX is my psx emulator of choice, no plugin headaches plus it strives to look and act like a psx (some actual emulation happening). heh

And if you were paying attention, it runs slow as shit on my specs. :\

And if I hear a person go on about how my system sucks, I'm killing.

Pfft. I'd rather have your computer. Mine's a 900 MHz Athlon with 320 MB RAM. I have no idea what the video card is, but I have... problems... when I use it for things. (Of course, I have MORE problems when I use different cards.)

There, now you can't kill me.

Being that yours is an Athlon and that it has 320MB RAM would probably beat out my system's Pentium III 1.0GHz with 192MB RAM...without the 256MB VRAM backing it up.

That'd be a fun benchmark.

Actually funny, Hiryuu. Your VRAM is bigger than your system memory
I have 512 MB (along with a crappy GeForce MX4000, but still fitting for me) system RAM, but it is faulty, having bluescreens from time to time (every two weeks usually), gotta replace it after I acquire some money.

As for Xenogears, it should run fine with Pete's OpenGL plugin, as I use it for many games. Sometimes games like Kurushi/Intelligent Qube (no spelling error) have squished screens if you don't enable SAI stretch or how it is called, but other than that - most games run well here, too.

Ahh, but Hiryuu, if I had your computer, it would have 512MB RAM by now. It's easy to get used RAM if you don't mind taking the rest of the computer it came in.

Besides, I mess with the insides of my computer occasionally, so mine would probably measure up differently if I had the Creative, MGA, or Quantum3D video card inside. Which reminds me, I don't know how the Quantum3D measures up in 3D and DVD performance. Or if it will even work. (It's broken. Oops.)

See and that last bit would be the problem; I'd have things lined out my apartment door. :\

PC-100 strips of RAM aren't easy to come by for me these days.
