Hello all! Hope everyone is well. I'm back from the dead with some news. First of all, I want to thank icegoom for pointing me to Acmlm's board II. I hadn't heard news of the move, and I had assumed this community was dead. I'm so happy to see business is still booming.

You all probably noticed that I was on a long hiatus -- I hadn't touched a Mario ROM in months. That would probably still be the case if an email hadn't shown up in my inbox -- written entirely in Japanese. Through the power of online translation, I figured out it was about Sprite Tool. Still, it would have slipped through the cracks if I hadn't opened the attached screen shots. I was simply AMAZED at what I saw.

I started talking to him. He mentioned he was having some problems, and sent me some asm code he'd been working on. I was really impressed with some of the clever things he was doing. Unfortunately for him, TRASM and Sprite Tool weren't playing nice for some of it. He asked me if I could help him out, and I ended up making him a custom build of Sprite Tool for him.

With a newly found interest in hacking, I started digging around. I was able to get my hands on some new custom sprites. I also came across a game that is simply brilliant. It's by far the most original, fun, innovative hack that I've ever seen. WOW, it's just wow. I'll make a post about it soon

Anyway...

Because of the issues that Japanese hacker was having, I decided to release the source code for Sprite Tool. It's not very well written or documented (I did write it in an excited hurry last year,) but I tried to go back and add some useful comments. Hopefully someone may be able to get something out of it.

Sprite Tool 1.25 includes some updates, some of my unreleased work, and some sprites from Japan. Check it out!

* Source is included in the 'source' subdirectory.

* You can now specify your rom and sprite list as command line arguments. From command prompt you can run "sprite_tool.exe rom_name.smc sprite_list.txt" to bypass the prompts.

* I fixed a bug that was causing sprites to get assembled for the wrong bank. I never heard anyone complain about it, but it could have potentially caused issues if people were using long addresses.

And no release would be complete without some new sprites...

First, my unreleased sprites from last summer. They are all based off of YI enemies and use the ExGfx file yi_enemies (SP4).bin.
* yi_goomba.cfg
* yi_shyguy.cfg
* kabooma.cfg

edit: *****Japanese sprites removed for now*****

That's all I got for now. Hope you enjoy.

OMG YAY UR BACK!!!!!!
...so... Yeah. Welcome back.

Oh, right. I noticed a bug in this sprite that you may want to fix if you make any future releases. The bugfix thread should still be on the first page.

Know what? I just DL'd Sprite Tool 1.0 an hour ago, and then you show up with an update. Irony at its ripest and juiciest

Welcome back mikeyk--Acmlm's is still going strong, and SMW hacking is not dead--yet.

And it's always cool having new sprites. Did you use your ASM genius to hack DWTLC for the Bowser statue lasers? A Homing Bullet? Awesome. Just don't give this to n00bs who want to make impossibly hard garbage heap hacks

Yeah...and are you working on an SMW hack now? My idea: a Demo World for custom sprites, if you will. Leave it unlocked so newcomers can base their hack on it and get a little crash course in custom stuff. But I'm sure you'll make something 100X better than I can

But I'm not giving up on my hack! (If you want, you can read the thread, just a few down from here)

Ha ha! I'm just glad you logged into your SMWCentral account again. I was afraid you wouldn't see my message after the one time I spotted you. Glad to see you back, anyway.

Ah, so much awesomeness. You've got me extremely interested about this Japanese hack. Any information about a release? I saw Anikiti had an upside down Spiny in his newest hack, so I imagine the Japanese SMW community is passing around sprites like we do.

I can't wait to try out all these new sprites, but the one I've already stuck in my hack is Chain Chomp. Ah, rapture. My ghetto sped-up unstompable Tweeter which always faces Mario and is constrained to a small area via invisible Mario-only blocks is just going to have to be retired. With the addition of Chain Chomp, all we're missing is a SMB1 Blooper to have a full Mario bestiary in my eyes. (On the subject of Chain Chomp, any way to change the tile used by its chain? I can live with tile C2 if I have to; it's just not listed in the tilemap)

Oh, right. I noticed a bug in this sprite that you may want to fix if you make any future releases. The bugfix thread should still be on the first page.

I'll add that Magus at SMWCentral made a fix to your Firebar sprite. It was still processing the sprite when it was off-screen, so if you used more than one or two in an area, it caused a lot of slowdown. You might be interested to look at his code. (He also made a giant Firebar)

Oh, hey, what's this "Originals" folder? This is the source code for various sprites from the original game? Can these be inserted with Sprite Tool, or do they need initialization codes?

I came from a thread with Japan.

I heard that Japanese Sprite has been sent by an email, but, as for there can be it, some fool is to have done it.

In fact, Japanese Sprite wants not to be known very much.
To ignore it this time if such an email has been sent; thanking you in advance.

Then good-bye

It may be a good idea to post the original Japanese text for non-machine translation by an expert.

Machine-translation is difficult to understand.

Let me give it a shot...

I am from Japan.

It would appear that Japanese sprites were released to the public.
It looks like somebody sent Japanese sprites by mail.

We don't want anyone to know about Japanese sprites.

If somebody sends such a mail again, please disregard it.

I don't get it, why would you want to keep these things secret? We share our sprites and other findings to the public, wouldn't it be nice if you guys did?

I agree with sharing sprites.
However,the problem is that
you have introduced them without telling the very person who made them.

Without a way to contact the creator, we are not able to do anything.

Posting contact details would be a large help. As it is, we are only able to assume the contact mikeyk used was the original creator.

Aw... I no can has Chain Chomp? And I just figured out how to change the chain graphics, too.

I can understand being reluctant about releasing Aramaki and Bokoboko. Those seem like original characters that would add a unique touch to their creator's game. But I'd be pretty disappointed if we were denied use of the SMB3 and Yoshi's Island sprites. (You know, especially Chainy)

Please pardon my poor English.

I am a member of a japanese SMW hacking forum.
All members of our forum wish to express our gratitude for mikeyk.

This comment is about japanese sprites.

Four people made these sprites.
One is the auther of starsw.zip.
He wants to remove this archive file from sprite tool, because he will update frequently.

Another one made chain chomp, revserse spiny, YI penguin, homing bullet, and ptooie.
He said that all rights of his works were abandoned. Therefore, modification and redistribution are free.

Another made the graphic of bokoboko and aramaki.
He also allow who doesn't pretend making by oneself, to modify and redistribute.

The last one made the sources of bokoboko and aramaki.
He has not shown in our forum.

Looks like my decision to download the package this morning at school regardless of the low speed stemming from tunneling through two proxies and coming a bit late to physics class in expectation of this was a wise one... other than that, this is fairly impressive. Reminds me of how much I am out of the loop on SMW hacking

2ch: May I, out of curiosity, ask for the URL of that forum? It seems like you have some interesting development going on there...

I thought I saw the Chain Chomp sprite in your post this morning. Did you remove it or was it not in the .rar file this whole time?

EDIT: Oops. I just hope that updated list of japanese sprites will be back up soon.

SMW hacking once again rises from the dead. Welcome back, mikeyk

I'd really like to see that hack you were talking about

Those forums 2ch was talking about should be interesting to see too.

I tested that YI Goomba and it doesn't squish. Even if I use Yoshi to step on it or swallow it, it won't die. Is there some sort of error in the sprites code?

I'm glad we have come to an agreement to share some of the sprites.
I may not be a big fan of SMW hacking, but I must say that these look amazing and I may even have to try them! (Who knows, maybe I'll make a full hack!)

Thanks to the Japanese hacking community for allowing us to use their sprites. I'd give credit to the guy who remade the SMB3 sprites if I had his name. It'd be very interesting to see what's going on in the Japanese SMW Hacking scene, even if I couldn't read most of it.

I'm playing around with mikeyk's Yoshi's Island sprites now, and I'm just really impressed with how smooth their little feet are animated. The Yoshi's Island Shy Guy looks just like the one from that game. Kaboomba's like a walking Diagonal Bill generator? I guess the graphics for Spear Guy aren't quite set up correctly. His body doesn't animate and his spear's kind of glitched up, but it's all easily edited.

You can change its .cfg file to allow it to be squishable. Change it to this:

1
36
30 15 39 21 1 0
0 0
yi_goomba.asm

And it will squish when you jump on it. It doesn't wriggle around and pop back up like in Yoshi's Island, though. It just dies.
