I'm most likely going to buy a new computer, but I'm having problems deciding if I should try to get XP or Vista.

XP has always worked well enough for me and is compatible with nearly anything.

All Vista's criticism sort of scares me and I dislike some of the changes they made to it. Also, there's probably a lot of programs that are incompatible with Vista.

However, XP is old and developers will move onto Vista and ignore XP, making pretty useless within two years or so, forcing me to upgrade anyway.

So... What should I do?

1) XP: What I'm used to and that which currently works, but not in the future.
2) Vista: What I dislike and doesn't work, but will work in the future.
3) Linux: Uh... Maybe some day.
4) Whatever Mac's OS is called: No way! D:<

What I'd do first is check out what software incompatibilities you would have if you went with Vista. Then decide if that software is something you can live without for a while until it becomes compatible again. In terms of usability, I didn't find Vista a whole lot different from XP. I was able to pick up on it's differences fairly quickly. The main reason I'm still using XP for now is audio driver issues with my card (Vista, at the time, can't record from the "Wave Out Mix" while XP can) and the fact that Apache doesn't work very well with Vista yet.

And there's always multi-booting or virtual machines if you feel like those would help.

A) Get XP and wait until you have to get Vista (by which time it MIGHT work)
B) Get Vista and put up with the crap until it's fixed
C) Get a Mac (recommended, although I hear they are more expensive than PCs)

Okay, I'm a big Linux person myself, but it's just not for the everyday user, especially if they're fond of proprietary software not available to Linux users.

Honestly, I hate M$ just as much as the next person, but in all honesty, Vista isn't as bad as people have made it out to be. It's the first time I've installed a M$ OS without having to go driver searching after the install. It's actually takes advantage of the modern pc rather than letting resources going to waste... I'm just going on the record saying that Vista isn't as bad as a lot of people make it out too be.

As far as compatibility issues are concerned... I believe that there is a previous versions of Windows emulator for apps that may not be compatible built into Vista. None of the apps I ever when in a Windows environment have any compatibility issues with Vista, plus most OS's now are pre packaged with it anyway so that may be the easiest route for you.

In response to the wise apples who suggested using non-Windows OS's, I remind you that one of Smallhacker's concerns is compatibility for the software he uses.

As far as user support is concerned, Microsoft responding to a "My long-loved software doesn't work right on Vista" report sounds FAR more likely than them listening to "This new Vista-only software won't run on XP."

If compabilitity and support is an issue, I recommend using Vista. If you are willing to jump into the deep end and try alternate solutions altogether, then I recommend using anything else but Mac OS. (-:

Get a Mac and put Windoze on it. Problem solved. You get a good computer + if you need to use something that's Windoze-only then you have no problem because you also have XP or Vista or whatever.

To be completely honest, Vista seems like an incomplete OS. It might just be me, but there doesn't even seem to be a logo for it. (Startup is blank, just has the progress bar thing and the copyright, and the "Windows Logo" screen saver is blank).

Not to mention, there are countless bugs. One of the bugs I encountered with my mom's new computer is when it uses certain screensavers, the monitor never goes into standby mode... it just "wakes" back up.

Not to mention, Vista has issues with certain hardware, not just software. For example, if you hook into a router, Vista may not like it.

I'd say stick with XP (which seems to be hard nowadays, you'll probably need to manually install it) until Microsoft completes Vista and gets the bugs worked out of it.

Smallhacker, get XP, and wait till vista is at SP2 to get it.

I can't explain other than how the others have explained it.

Too bad that product support ends for Win2K Pro in 2010 or I would've recommended that. Stupid Microsoft Lifetime Policy.

Windows XP. Vista blows unless you need to use something DX10 exclusive...which doesn't exist. I say this with the fact that having Vista is pointless as of now...it may not be 'the worst OS ever' but it's mostly not worth the time.

That's why I dual-boot.

On the Windows side, I'd stick with XP until the bugs are ironed out of Vista, although I have a feeling I'll get Vista courtesy of Ripoff University this summer along with a new laptop. (Even with the perks, it's still a ripoff. The laptops are pieces of junk.)

I went with XP because I heard of horrible bloated Vista is. And DX10 dosen't seem to be worth it enough.

Also I'm considering to put Ubuntu on my laptop. Becuse I realized I hardly play games on my laptop, and most of the programs I use work well, or even better in Linux.

First off:
- If money's an issue at all, and you're buying a pre-made PC, go with Vista, it'll be cheaper in the end to get it bundled with the PC.
- If you're seriously worried that compatibility is going to be an issue, do what businesses do, wait for Service Pack 1 to be released before diving in.
- If you're looking for new features, they aren't here. For a fresh out of the oven OS, Vista's about as tepid as they come.
But do keep in mind, until Linux decides to stop being geekware at its core, resistance is futile.

I'm running Vista Business x64 right now, it shouldn't get less compatible than that. For the record, my only major compatibility issue has been my crazy ghetto GBA EZ Flash Advance card's cable, because of unsigned drivers. That's easily fixed with VMWare. Everything else has mostly been solved by downloading a no-longer-included DLL or something.
As far as bloat, it hasn't noticeably effected anything, even in this quite mediocre machine. And I'm one of those guys that keeps his desktop clear of icons just to make sure windows boots up faster.

But honestly, the only new features I really care about, you can pretty much get from Google Desktop (or, if you're willing to do some coding, Samurize is more flexible).

Alternatively, if you really like pretty things, money is no issue at all, and you don't mind paying $3000 (+the cost of windows) for a $1000 PC that you won't really be able to upgrade without buying a brand new PC, then go for a Mac. OSX is actually pretty cool.
But I'd imagine if that were the case, you'd've referred to your intended purchase as a "laptop", rather than a "computer".

That's funny because dx10 would be the only reason I would get vista. This is a concern for me as well when I build a new system. Do you think Dx10 will run on any other OSes?

I'd have to say stick with XP as long as possible. By then both Vista and Linux should have improved considerably. (I'm expecting a good deal of XP users migrating to Linux, prompting improvements to Wine and similar programs. Vista should be at SP1.) Then try Linux and see if you like it. If not, get Vista and try again later.

I know this post will be posted in vain, but...

Linux is just the kernel. An operating system is made up of the software you run on it. The bash command prompt in and of itself is installed to the computer in order to make the kernel useful.

OS's are the whole deal, like Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. Calling Linux an OS is like calling Text a newspaper. Part of the way there, but only a part.

Picky! Whenever people say "Linux", their intention is "Linux-based operating system". If everyone called Linux-based operationg systems by their names, we'd have like 500 different operating systems. It's for simplicity's sake. It's like saying "I photoshopped this image" instead of saying "I enhanced this image using Adobe® Photoshop® software".

Funny how no one's asked what he intends to use the system for.
For that matter, whether DX10's even an issue.
Moreover, .Net 3.5 will probably be backported to XP, and mono's getting better and better. But, for the linux and mac fans, he did say right off the bat:
3) Linux: Uh... Maybe some day.
4) Whatever Mac's OS is called: No way! D:<
I suppose this thread's as good a soapbox as any, though.

If you can't buy a computer without an OS, you should probably get Vista. If you have any problems with it, you can always install a *cough*pirate version*cough* of Windows XP until you feel like taking your Vista license into use.
