Rewards from communities and/or police stations for solving mysteries. Or even if a industry is being harmed by a ghost/monster/whatever, I would imagine the bunch get payed for their help.

Well I mean they are mystery solvers professionally I think. I mean I figure that's why they were always so pumped to go after a marrow-sucking monster. They find out that it's old Mr. Jenkins and then charge the tax payers of the community... that... or the Mystery Machine's dashboard is LOADED with drugs... or illegal immagrants.

I think all of the ideas here combined!, but in a weird way..

They solve the case about poor Mr.Jenkins, then they cross the border with illegal immigrants made of drugs, and sell them to children.

Yeah, I noticed. In all seriousness though, I'm pretty sure that they think of themselves, and have said before on the show, as a kind private detective agency. So yeah, I think it actually is explained on the show.

In all seriousness, they are probably funded on a per-client basis. Notice how they don't do things like travel to other countries un;ess a client asks them to, etc. I would assume that some of the more refined characters like Fred at least have a basic bank account for things like gas. You may not see it as part of the plot but that doesn't mean it's not there
