I'm not sure about other states, but Illinois has a law that you need 50 hours worth of driving experience while you have your permit before you can get your license. Luckily for me, I got mine while the requirement was still 25.

My test was also outrageously easy. The only thing besides normal driving I had to do was back around a corner.

I think in New York, you need forty hours of driving with your permit before you get your licence. My test wasn't too bad, just some weird questions on the written portion.

Got mine. Took me a while to get hang of using the clutch and gearstick, but now I'm awesome.

And the licence is very very useful for proving I'm 18 so I can buy alcohol.

Reminder: Take your original birth certificate, not a copy. I showed up with a copy of mine and they told me go go home. I had to come back the next day and stand in line all over again.

I have a learner's permit, which is fairly useless for anything besides (get this) learning as you have to have a fully-licensed driver in the car with you. You have to wait a year after you get it before applying for the next one, which is basically full except you can't have any booze, then another year after you apply for full (up to .08% alcohol level).

I hate driving in town though. Too much to pay attention to at once, and a lot of bad drivers and stupid intersections here. I'm better on the highway, though my dad still tends to nitpick because he's a professional and thus has high expectations, like somehow driving for a living has modified my DNA after birth to improve my own driving skills.

Your parents consider B's bad? Sheesh.

My dad was like that. When I got a very high B (an 89%) in one subject on a progress report (not even the real report card) in 5th grade, he thought it was the end of the world.

considering it was fifth grade, he's probably got a good reason to be pissed
