I'm talking about emulation here. Do you prefer to control your games with a gamepad or a keyboard?

I can't live without my gamepad. I find keyboard control for NES and SNES games to be extremely awkward, although I used to be fairly good at it. I would always be hitting the wrong keys, especially with emulators that didn't allow use of Ctrl, Alt, or Shift by themselves and forced me to use smaller-sized keys like Z and X. I found it difficult to perform tricky jumps and such in Mario hacks.

My gamepad has similar buttons to an SNES controller, but no select or start. Since those are generally more useful than L and R, I map the L and R buttons to select and start instead for both NES and SNES emulation and use keyboard keys for the actual L and R. I have the left and bottom buttons (the buttons are in an SNES-style diamond) mapped as B and A for NES, as I found that to be the most natural and was used in some Nintendo games like Super Mario All-Stars. The right and top buttons are the turbo B and A for NES emulation. I even use my gamepad for joystick emulation for my Commodore 64 emulator. I find actual joysticks to be very awkward.

I have to use keyboard. Not because I'm used to it but because this laptop has only one USB connection and its taken up by my mouse.

However, if I could, I would use both, actually. Although I don't have a gamepad made specifically for PC, I have a PS2->USB connector so I can use those controllers for gameplay if I want, save for the beatmania US controller which doesn't work.

Consider a USB hub. I have one that plugs into a USB port and has 4 connectors of its own on it, so you can plug in more devices.

Of course, if computers didn't waste all that space on legacy serial and parallel connectors, they'd have more room for USB ports...

I have a USB adapter with multiple inputs for Gamecube, Playstation 1 and 2 and dreamcast controllers. And they all work brilliantly.

So I use the Gamecube controller for N64 emulation, and the PSX controller for SNES/GBA/etc.

Not bad for an adapter that only cost £7 (and thats including post and packaging!).

Lik-Sang was awesome.

Gamepad definitely. I haven't played roms with a keyboard ever since I bought a gamepad back in April. I find it hard to play N64 roms with a keyboard because there are so many buttons that you need to map.

My gamepad is designed exactly like a PS2 controller. I use it for just about every system, even in GBA emulation.

Depends on the game. For RPGs and any turn-based strategy games, I can get by with either. For puzzles, I'm best with a keyboard. Everything else, I greatly prefer a gamepad, even though I'm better at shooters with a keyboard.

I have no gamepad but I'm so much used to the keyboard that I don't really need a gamepad.

Actually, I dont know if this counts, but I only ever use my PSP for GBA emulation.

And that's because nearly 99% of the games run damn near perfect on it...unlike on VBA on my PC.

My Saitek P880 makes me happy. Obviously, I use gamepads, although I'm relatively skilled with a keyboard, L and R screw me up becuase of their unique positions as the shoulder buttons.

I hardly ever do any emulation anymore, but I'm more used to the keyboard myself.

Logitech USB gamepad to be specific. I can't stand mashing keys to play a game...

Keyboard. Not that I can't use my PS2 controller on here...but I won't own as much ass because I've trained myself up over years to be in tip-top shape with it.

The only problem is that you usually have to have it set a certain way for it to get multiple button presses correct on certain system. All keyboards are different like that and won't allow multiple button presses without giving you hell over it. That's why I had to convert to spread instead of arrow keys in StepMania, for instance.

I use a keyboard. I think, if you gave me a gamepad, I'd be a lot worse with it because I'm so used to using the keyboard for everything.

Gamepad. Saitek P2500 works really well. I've gotten so used to it, I probably couldn't change back to the keyboard, even in the event of an emergency.

Keyboard. I don't have a decent controller, and I'm not allowed to spend 50 bucks on an Xbox 360 controller

I have a controller, with no covers on the analog sticks, so it's pointy ends that hurt my fingers So I never use it.

From left to right.

Logitech Precision, I believe. This is what I used all the time before. The d-pad jams, when pressing up or down. I disassembled the controller to see what the problem was. I lost the plastic cover-thing for left, though.

Game-Elements Retractable PC Control Pad. A complete Dualshock ripoff, down to the colors of the 4 standard buttons. Sure, it has analog sticks, but the input signals were just so laggy. They weren't instant -- they were at most a quarter-second.

Logitech Dual-Action. Just like the last controller, except without the retarded lag and retractable USB cable. I'm currently using this controller. It works like a charm.

I guess you can say that I use a controller.

I used to use a keyboard, but I got this gamepad a month or so ago and haven't let is leave my desk. I use the Logitech Dual Action, same as Doritokiller. I have some Logitech joystick around here somewhere, but I'm not really into flight simulators that much so I don't know where it went.

However, for some specific games requiring lots of precision (not necessarily roms, but games like N and Icy Tower) I prefer to use the keyboard. I can't say it helps me a whole lot, though

I used keyboards for years but eventually bought a USB adaptor for PS2 controllers. This was my choice since the layout is pretty similar to SNES controllers, and a few extra buttons are a bonus. Easy to adapt with Genesis and other games as well.

I always play with this nowadays, unless I'm feeling really lazy and don't want to hook it up.
