A long time ago I found an old DOS util called SRIP for extracting N64 samples. It works on some games, like the original Mario 64 release (not the rumble-enabled version) and Goldeneye, but not the last majority of games.

Is there some sort of more effective method or utility for sample-ripping that I've missed, or is that as good as it gets?

SNESSOR 95 works for the majority of SNES and N64 games if I remember correctly. It's windows based, and can extract all samples from a game at once, or play them through/extract them in whatever order you like.

edit - here's the link

Doesn't work too hotly with N64 roms, I'm afraid.

Damn.

I was just going by the fact that it worked brilliantly with Goldeneye 007, but I'm guessing most games use a different format.

Most games have unique sound formats, yes. Or at least games from specific developers. You can expect audio technology to change over time and from dev to dev.

Well, I just loaded up SNESSOR95 and ripped every single sample from three N64 games perfectly.

So I'm saying it works just fine.

Here, I've uploaded the samples ripped from Mario 64, Zelda: OOT and Diddy Kong Racing in a RAR:

http://www.mediafire.com/?3ogq79yg1jm

And also, in each game's folder, theres quite a few blank *.wav files. But believe me, each sound sample from the game is there somewhere.

edit - also, bear in mind that some audio players (such as winamp) dont play sound files under 1 second in length.

Huh, strange. You've had more luck than I.
