I use grouping but only to sort taskbar buttons by program, not to group them in one ... it does work much better vertically, I've had a vertical taskbar for about 4 years now (and usually around 20 task buttons on it too)


Reminds me of some small experiment I did 2 months ago:
What 2GB RAM and a vertical taskbar can fit (that didn't even lag me much)
