Something I discovered a few days ago I thought I'd share. This is just awesome. If you ask me, shmups have some of the best music in videogames. Period.
And just when I thought most were synth/rock/metal based, I hear Radiant Silvergun. That games soundtrack sounds pretty much exactly like something you could have heard off Vagrant Story/Final Fantasy XII. Thanks to this radio I've discovered tons of great OSTs of games I haven't even played (yet). For starters, if anyones interested I'd recommend Hyper Duel Arranged, Iridion 3D & II Arranged, Ibara (sounds like Sonata Arctica), Radiant Silvergun, and Salamander II. Those are just some of the awesome ones I discovered last night. Download the playlist! Main site and detailed playlist. Enjoy. |

I will vouch for Iridion II being awesome on the GBA and Salamander II (Life Force II) being awesome in the arcades.
No one knows about them though. EDIT: I can't do shit with it...128kbps. |

You've played R-Type atleast, but no Gradius? For shame. Although those two series and the first life-force are all I've played, still. ____________________ There are things I want to put here. Posted by Doritokiller Heh, you're going to love Gradius. While not as evil level design wise as R-Type, it has a "if you die, you might as well reset, since you lose all power-ups upon death, and it takes a couple stages to get them all back - and without powerups, you're not going to survive those stages" gameplay concept which is sure to annoy (plus, you can't recharge shields, just replace them - a shield takes 4 hits before it breaks, and the next hit will do you in, but you're not allowed to get a fully powered shield until you've been hit those four times. Amazing fun when you got bullets coming from all directions, and you have to hit the B button right after losing your shield if you hope to survive). I have beaten the thing, but that was a no-death run. In R-Type, you can often just keep trying the same level over and over until you get your game over, in Gradius, one mistake will end the game for you right there and then. |

Gradius III let you recharge shields, the other ! items were worthless anyway, so why not get full barrier? R-Type didn't even have shields. And you can get back up on your feet, depending on where it is you die, though, I'll give you that. ____________________ There are things I want to put here. R-Type had the Force, which acted like a shield.
And hm, I have to admit to only having played the original Gradius (but hey, I did beat it, in spite of the no-recharging crap). Should try some of the sequels some day. |

That's true, though the force is not quite as useful as a shield as you need to use it offensively too. I don't fault the game for that though, it's awesome, and makes a genre that typically consists of just shooting crap require a bit more thought. ____________________ There are things I want to put here. Posted by AdamantPosted by Doritokiller Tell me about it. I just got a copy of Gradius III/IV for the PS2, and man those games are a pain even on 'Very Easy' (for someone who's never played them). Though I own and have beaten Gradius III for the SNES, the version the PS2 game includes is the arcade one, which is much harder. Oh yeah and I still haven't beaten Gradius V, after owning it for months. I absolutely can't stand that green-gas-whatever stage. But yeah, you die in Gradius, you may as well give up. So for those who don't like that, I'd recommend playing Thunder Force (both III and IV are incredible). When you die you don't restart, instead you just respawn instantly depending on how many lives you have. And the game just plays a lot differently and isn't as heavily focused on the powerups. Though, everything else is crazier and faster paced than R-Type/Gradius games, so they're pretty damn hard too. Its also nice being able to switch from 4 different speeds at any given time without any powerups. That's what really gets you in Gradius, the 5mph speed you start off with. |
