While watching This interview, someone mentioned Microsoft Surface.

I don't know about you, but this is actually the first time I been impressed in a really long time about a product that comes out of Microsoft. It's like a touchscreen, but not with some of the limitations... such as only being able to register one point at a time on the whole thing.

One thing that makes you wonder is how expensive it will be. Might even take awhile before there's a consumer-version. >>

I've heard about this. Apparently they're not planning on making a consumer version for quite some time. I've heard it'll be more for things like casinos at first.

Still, looks very interesting. You have to wonder if it'll ever replace the mouse and/or keyboard, or if it'll just be more of a novelty.

If they can pull it off, that would be pretty cool. I doubt, however, that things lke the "Jen's zune" would work well, since I can think of few MP3 players with built-in WiFi (though I do believe the Zune has that). Plus, how would you use older software?

Still, it's got a lot of promise.

In other news, it's... sorta 'meh. Touchscreens are sorta nothing new to me.

It isn't a touchscreen. I believe the technology actually uses something like 6 cameras to detect the touch / motion / devices placed on the Surface. To actually be able to pinpoint things the entire surface is bathed in light but so they don't ruin the effect it's infrared light.

And I am with Ailure, this is pretty interesting.

I saw a video of something identical to this about a year ago and it certainly wasn't made by Microsoft. Once again they have come in and bought innovation instead of creating it.... thus proving once again that Microsoft couldn't come up with an original idea even if it conked them in the head.

6 cameras? Well, I admire their approach, but then it seems a bit overkill to me. I'm sure some people will enjoy it, though.

God damn those people. Can't they come up with something ON THEIR OWN?! And of course, knowing Microsoft, this this will have 5,276,358 bugs to be worked out once they release it, and it will take approximately 5 years for 1/2 of those bugs to be worked out.
By then, Apple (or some other company) will have come out with the same thing, only better, and it will actually work.

Is it a flat surface? Yes
Is it touchable? Yes
Does it follow the movements of a finger/etc? Yes

Logic dictates that it is a touchscreen. "If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...."

Simple multitouch touchscreen.

If it's not, it sure as hell LOOKS/BEHAVES like one.

And yeah, what an original concept that we've never seen before.

Gotta love how one person says somethinga nd it's immediately taken as gospel by everyone else just cuz it hates on MS.

By the way, I've only seen this done once before, and that was an entirely difference concept (musical interface with variou shsapes/etc controlling sound, far from an actual computer)

And who fucking cares? Even if they didn't come up with it they should still be allowed to refine it and make it kick ass, or should we all hate on modern car companies because the idea of a vehicle that makes people go around the planet was created by Ford in 19-bullshit?

You all suck, by the way.

Isn't that just a touchscreen (i.e. "one point of contact" e.g. mouse)?

This is raically different in that it allows multiple.

If you're talking about my thread, look further down at koi's reply. Not his first video, but his other two.

I didn't always hate Microsoft... until I realized they love to steal ideas, buy out innovation and stomp on there competition with unfair business practices.

There aren't many products in existence that allow multiple touches on the same "touchscreen". The Surface is one that has been announced, the iPhone is another, and there is one other one whose name I cannot think of right now.

Personally I am just happy to see technology moving in this direction. I want to see more things like this. This seems like a move to interfaces which people are likely to have less trouble with. People "get" touching stuff.

Not that I have any problem with complicated systems -- but I know that not everyone is like me, and I want to see more systems that just about anyone can mess with and do things.

The idea of putting a camera down on the Surface and having the photos "spill" out of it is something I think nearly anyone can understand. Shuffling them around with your fingers, I think just about anyone can understand. To put them on your mate's phone, just move them to your mate's phone.

I don't see what's so terrible and wrong about that. Unless you want computers to be hard for just anyone to be able to use and show people photos or music or data, what is the problem?

I've seen dozens of examples of this without MS' logo. This is a perfect example of MS taking existing tech, slapping their name on it, and calling it new. Also, while it's neat, it doesn't look very practical. How do I control what directory things go to when I drag them into my device? How do I put my device down to transfer some pics to my mom's without it pulling up all the pr0n also stored on my device?

Existing tech?

I'm pretty sure that there is other multi-touchscreens but I'm also sure they probably work in other ways. Besides this apparently been in development since 2001.

Yeah, they've mentioned it all works on mostly existing consumer tech.

And lol, now we get to the real issue -- you guys don't want your porn "falling out" of your camera

Given that we don't know much about how the system works right now aside from a few videos, how do you know that there's not systems in place for privacy and security?

Replace Microsoft with Google and you have a similar scenario. Here is a list of some of Google's recent acquisitions. Shouldn't Google be capable of doing the things these company do? Google bought the company who compiled the satellite images you find in Google Maps/Earth. So, how is this different? This is business.
