Yeah, I've been playing this game a lot recently... It's kinda surprising to know it's been out since the Windows 95 days. I used to play this back when I was 12 or so, when my friend had it. Later, I searched and found a cd crack for the game, and I think that was the first piece of software I've ever gotten a crack for.

Lately, my friends and I have been having LAN parties playing this game (The Conquerors expansion), and I found that I really suck and need to practice.

My main problem is that I don't prioritize creating an army, so I usually am focusing on research and building, and my friends bring a group of horses over, and I have like 5 infantry.

So anyway, who else plays this game?

I love Age of Empires II. I, too, am a builder though, and my capabilities for forging an army are quite low.

I guess this is my curse for being more into Turn-based strategy (the likes of Civilization or Galactic Civilizations). I'm just not a fast enough mover for Real-time strategy games. I don't know the hot keys, and I certainly don't know advanced tactical strategies. I'll forever be hopeless at the game.

The funny thing is that my friend's cousins were at his house during one of our LAN matches, and since my friend likes going against them in various games, we fought a match with them against us. The thing is, they play Starcraft a lot, and it shows, because we got completely RUSHED by weird war horse-carraiges. It was awful, there was like 40 of them, and my army of 10 swordsmen couldn't handle it.

They also had two markets on opposite corners of the map, with like 100 trade carts going between them. (you get massive gold that way, which is one of your stockpile items, along with wood, food, and stone, for those who don't play this game)

But yeah, I've been practicing, I am getting better at this game.

I "own" Galactic Civilzations II and Age of Empires II. I prefer Turn Based Strategy as well. I still prefer Age of Empires (the original). I simply couldn't get used to 2.

I think II is everything I wanted to be. It has unit formations, queued farms, unique units/technologies, and many more, general improvements.

I'm just not good at it.

Truth-be-told, I suck at these games in general, simply because I can't seem to get it through my skull that I actually have to wage war to get anywhere. I'm simply not good at it. I like to build stuff. Any military I build is almost purely defensive. It takes a real effort for me to build an attack force. I usually just go the easy route and try to build myself to victory, though...

(If a game allows for technology/wonder/building/peaceful anything type of victory conditions, I'm much more likely to go for it.)

That's why I like Galactic Civilizations II. You can actually turn war "off" to a certain extent. By forcing all the civilizations to be friendly. Then you can win however you wish, Research Victory, Alliance Victory, Cultural Victory. I am a defensive player as well. I simply suck at offensive maneuvers of any kind. In every Strategy game I play I always play defensively. Even the C&C series.

Command & Conquer is a difficult series to play defensively. I admit, I've tried some of the games, but if you move too slowly, you wind up overwhelmed pretty quickly.

I don't turn war off in the games I play. In fact, in Civ IV, I turn on Aggressive AI and Raging Barbarians in order to try to force myself to play better. I kind of works, but halfway through a conquering session, I wind up reverting to cultural builds and whatnot.

In AoEII, I can play up to Moderate, though I have a tendency to be overwhelmed at the difficulty level. If I can get my act together, then I'm fine, but most likely, I'll get trounced relatively early.

I dunno, some CnC games plays defensivly... Tiberian sun is apparently one of them. >> But it's been awhile since I last played it so...

But infact, it's easy to turtle in CnC3. You just need a rapid expansion plan (such as making sure that your economy is superior, becuse that's good longterm), and to make sure that you actually build something you can build with early on to defend yourself from rushes. >>

Yeah, Tiberian Sun is designed to wait until the Mammoth MK.II or the Cyborg come out with the other big units and then big mega-wars. It is fun. The expansions made the defensive aspect even better. Mind you, I am a healthy medium between rush tactics and big army tactics. I build a strong defensive force that can counter my enemies. You attack me, then I'll be right on you. That is an old Starcraft dinger I learned. That's why I always played Terran. You attack me, 9 times out of 10 my forces were big enough to retaliate.

AoE I + RoR = Infinite fun.

I know I'm riding the "I liked AoE I more than AoE II, lol" wagon here, but damn it, it's true

But it's only better with RoR for one reason: Unit freaking queues.

I've only ever played AoE2, so that's probably why I'd prefer it over AoE1.

I'm currently on the 5th Joan of Arc mission. I feel like I'm improving, but I'm still not fast enough. I think it's an issue of nervousness or fear.

Conquerors is fun, but I'm no good at multitasking. Start one farm, build another, totally forget about building a military, get rushed.

But dang, it's fun.

This is the same for me too, even though I like RTS's more. On Warcraft III I got as far as the final mission in the Undead campaign (which, if you haven't played, involves having a large army protect this necromancer-type dude for 30 minutes while he summons something). I just could not beat that mission. From what I've been trying to learn about AoE2 (I haven't gotten very far), it sounds slower paced.

Probably the best strategy game I've played is Master of Magic from way back when, but the turns were a bit TOO slow paced. Still, great game, and I only wish they'd make another one like it.

I'm a Dawn of War junky, but I started with Age of Empires II and Command and Conquer.

It was fun, but the missions can be kind of hard.

DAWN FO WARASF?DSAF?QW$!@#?QW!E@?!~!!!!!!!

Man, possessed marine rush = <3 Chaos is just so awesome.

I gradually became more a fan of the Killakan rush and the Imperial Guard "hai thar, i be here u be thar. eat thsi basiliski!!!!!!". Man, Dawn of War was my poison in first year. Every couple of nights my friends and I would play that game. I actually once blew off a date in order to play a map that we created.

Warp Spiders = evil.

The Eldar are great. They just have so much style. I am still partial to the Orks and just how Orky they are.

AOE2 was kinda cool, but I'm slow and use this thing called a mouse. I just can't do the lightning fast HCCCC HCCCC HCCCC or whatever the hell the hotkeys are. So I don't play multiplayer as I'd get creamed, but against the AI I find it super easy, especially when the enemies surrender after I knock down like 2 buildings anyway. The first AOE was tough and I find it to be a better challenge.
