Damn... I wish we had polls...

Well, which Linux desktop environment do you prefer more? I'll have to say KDE, as I've found it much better, and I didn't like GNOME that much (tried both )

Also, am I the only one that pronounces KDE like "Katie"?

KDE. Gnome has the world's worst file selector.
Even though I use windows...
(Damn GTK apps refuse to use Windows common dialogs on Windows)

Neither. I used each for a time (resting on Gnome for the last portion of my Linux life) but by the time my Month From Hell was over, I gladly dumped both of them and returned to Windows.

(in short: neithre)

I'll go with Gnome just for simplicity's sake. KDE tries to be a bit flashy, and I'm not all that fond of Konquerer.

I prefer KDE...I've had problems with Gnome, not to mention it has a horrible name.

And I always said kay-dee-ee. On the other hand, I pronounce the PNG image format as "ping".

believe it or not, kde is more memory efficient than gnome and fluxbox (!!!!11) and that's why I use it. It may LOOK bloatier but it's really more optimal than the others (fluxbox gives a pretty illusion of being faster)

You shouldn't judge Linux just from testing Fedora core, a experimental Linux distro.

I think I would prefer KDE out of those two. I do have tried both a bit though.

Gnome. KDE reminds me too much of Windows.

I've had my rounds with both of them. I have problems with both, but I find Gnome to be better personally.

Gnome:
+Looks nice and clean
+I prefer it's default apps
-Lack of customization

KDE:
+Whoa I can change that, cool
-Konquerer - Explorer only for Linux
-My desktop looks like it was manufactured by fisher-price!

I've had times where I prefered KDE, and times of switching back and forth constantly, but currently I'm with Gnome... and don't see myself changing any time soon.

KDE (which I pronounce with the German letter names ("kah-day-eh") out of habit) or Openbox, interchangeably.

I see GTK as a plague of humanity well on one level with Hitler, Emperor Nero and the Catholic church.

hurrr

rm some_file some_other_file

Oh oops my file's gone.

Also the CLI in Linux sucks fucking balls, so I've pretty much said that I'm never using Linux again (joy WinXP/2000).

Uh, what command were you trying to use instead of "rm"?

"rn" yes.

But there are many, many, many more things about Linux that piss me off than just a silly command.

I haven't used desktop Linux since early 2005, when my beloved Debian box asploded and I decided to replace it with a Power Mac. Thus, I'm not sure how relevant my opinion is to the current state of Linux desktop environments, but here it goes anyway.

Neither KDE nor Gnome appealed to me. Early on in my Linux days, I tried Enlightenment on a lark and wound up loving it. No taskbar to constantly take up space, no desktop icons to get lost under windows. An application menu called up by clicking on bare desktop space, so I would only see it when I needed it. Full-featured virtual desktop pagers (thumbnail views) that showed useful previews of windows and allowed me to reposition the windows anywhere through that view. I could drag them to another desktop or even shuffle them around within the same desktop.

After a while, I got annoyed with the lack of development, jagged fonts, and the fact that the interface didn't use QT or GTK (thereby making it a pain in the ass to have a consistent desktop style). There were other quirks, but at this point, I can't remember them. I heard good things about XFCE 4, which drew its GUI with GTK2. Most of my preferred apps used GTK2, so I would therefore have a more or less consistently styled desktop. I tried XFCE. I liked it. The desktop pagers weren't quite as awesome as Enlightenment's, but that was the only downside I recall. Like Enlightenment, it didn't get in my way. The configurable launch bar (which is reminiscent of the dock in OS X) was actually useful to me.

If I recall correctly, isn't bash just one of many selections for shell management? There's probably one that looks and behaves just like DOS if you look in the right place.

Even if there isn't, it wouldn't be too hard to setup. You can use aliases as one way to change command names (change rn to rename, mv to move, cp to copy...) and I think you can have two aliases reference the same command (if you use certain options on a command all the time, just set up an alias for that). Then you can adjust a variable to change the prompt and make it look however you want.

Anyway... I've used both Gnome and KDE before. I am using KDE for my linux distro ATM, but I don't have a strong preference for one or the other. The main reason I switched to KDE is because I didn't see myself needing my menu and taskbar separate.

Black Lord: I don't see Konquerer as being terrible, but I could see how some people might. I still prefer Firefox for web browsing any day, but use Konquerer for standard directory stuff. As for the colors, I've heard the same complaint about XP, and like XP, I'm sure you can configure it to look different.

GNOME because there is nothing for KDE that is even remotely good (except k3b).
