Are there any odd names you give to various items or phenomena that nobody else uses?

I, and others in my family, often refer to a refrigerator as a "dero" (spelling varies; pronounced dair-oh). This comes from my grandmother, who for years would refer to the refrigerator as the "icebox". One time, I asked what an icebox is, and my mom told me that my grandma called it that because she couldn't say refrigerator (she moved to the USA at age 19 and didn't learn English until then). My grandma then tried to say it, and it came out "refrigidaire". She tried again a few times and once switched to "refrigidero", which we all (including her) thought was hilarious. So we all started calling it that. Eventually, I dropped the beginning part and only used the part of the word she got wrong, so now it has become "dero".

We tried to teach her how to say refrigerator a few times, but I think she got the sounds confused as the closest she came was "refrigeraror". Her first languages were Spanish and French, and T and D in American English between vowels sound like an R in Spanish. Plus the confusion of the similar brand name Frigidaire.

Another word I use often is DOCALE (spoken with an Italian accent, doh-kah-lay). I use it in AIM, usually, because of my tendency to hold the shift key a bit too long and start a word with two capital letters instead of one. DOCALE is derived from DOuble CApital LEtters, and refers to a typo that involves such, for example "GEorge".

Ah. Your "DOCALE" is something my ex used to do a lot. He'd type his name as "BEn". When I get the occasional irritating message from him, I've modified it to come up as "WAnker". He's usually blocked but occasionally manages to sign on with an account I've forgotten or that doesn't use blocking properly.

I refer to lots of things as "thingie", but I am not sure that's particularly unusual. I also use some rhyming slang for things on occasion but again that's not particularly unusual either.

Yeah, most people have a word like thingie that they use. For a while I would refer to any unidentified object as a "dealie", then I dropped the use of the term. Maybe it only sounded funny in computer class.

Speaking of computer class, some of the people in there didn't know as much about computers. One of them referred to the Control (Ctrl) key as "Sitrell", so we would call it that for a while ("Sitrell-C to copy, sitrell-V to paste...") but that died out as well.

Back when I hated TEK and Acmlm's, I referred to them collectively as Tekmlm's.

Random, completely patterned habit of mine to replace nouns with various odd(incorrect) words at odd intervals when I feel like confusing people.

Words that make the list most are:

hamster
laser
hat

And other non-words are:

thinger
thingie
thingamajig
whatsits

Yeah...

When working on personal fan-projects or debug passwords for them I often tend to use terms like Metrod or leval or such. I also sometimes like to say Mario like Mayrio, and mentally refer to some programs by the odd folder names I've given them(i'mbored for ZSNES, metroid0 for VBA)

One room at our school, we call the Sunnezimmer, you could translate it as the sunny room or sunroom or something like that.

That's because it has two window fronts.

And most of the time, I refer to any kind of device as a machine, a mach8ine that plays Wii games, or my machine at home with internet and stuff like that.

I tend to use "thing" a lot. Especially when I've forgotten something's name.

Also, my brother likes to change the subject with "anywho" (or "anyhoo").

My sister used to come up with tons of completely random names for pets and people. Mainly, our dog, and myself. Our dog had the most odd names. Her real name was Honey, but my sister would call her things like Comet, Commodore, Boris, Boris Carloff Jr, Bencint, Peligroso, Borador, mi perro (that one I can understand at least), Rufus, Little Elvis, Fudge, Honey bunches of oats, and Honey bunch crunch. We all started calling her by those names too to the point where our poor dog would respond no matter what you called her.

As for me, I remember somehow she got the idea of calling me John Travolta, which later became Travisota, and then for about 12 years my name turned to just John. Which is odd considering I'm a girl, but whatever.

Then my Grandpa who we always called Popaw, my sister started calling Bob. Again no real reason, his real name was Clarence.

Then there was our cat whom we couldn't think of a better name for other than Kitty. My dad called her Miss Kitty. But eventually my sister stared calling her Chicken. I least I know where she got that one. When our cat would sit, she looked more like a hen nesting an egg than a cat. Eventually we all started calling her that too.

Actually, she still has random names for people, just not nearly as many, and mostly just for her friends now.

"blargh" = my generic response to anything that irritates me.

(alternate spellings/pronunciations: blarg, blarf, bleh, meh, plorp)

hahaha

Everyone fucks up my dog's name, My mom and I ended up using the fucked up names too.

Her name is "Nala", but people have came up with a bunch of different shit.. Lala, Nyla, Nela, Lola, Lana, ect. She pretty much responds to anything that has "La" in it now..

Instead of cursing, I say things are garbage, stupid, ignorant, and worthless.

When in doubt, I add the words 'Laser' and 'Ice Cream' to whatever I'm saying.

Me and my friends create weird acronyms for people. Like, once we had this guy who tried to convert us to Christianity, and brandished his diabetes at us.

His new name was ARD (Annoying Religious Diabetic).

I lived in a very Christian area so I had people trying to convert me all the time. It never worked.

Another one is "hole savers", which refer to the round sticky rings you place over the holes in paper in three-ring binders when they get ripped. This just comes from one guy at school who asked for them and called them that, not rememberin the technical term. Everyone seems to think they're candy though, like Life Savers.

I usually say "what's his face" and "thingamajig" and "thing". Mostly "thing" when I forgot what it was called. I also like saying "thingie".

We call soda "pop" around here in Pittsburgh. But that comes with a lot of other pittsburghese.

It's pop in Detroit too. "Soda" just sounds really weird to me. "Coke" is even weirder when it is used to refer to pop that isn't Coca-Cola.

I usually use "soda" unless I'm specifically referring to a Coca-Cola. But I rarely drink either, so... eh.
