I figured that there would've been a thread on this a month ago but it seems that no one's mentioned it.

DX10.

Guess you may as well get it, since there's a likelihood of use coming up here shortly (SC2, for instance).

Validation required. Fuck that.

I´m not running Genuine Windows XP.

[shrugs]

All I know is that I yanked my copy of Win2K Pro off my cousin and it says I'm genuine when I got DX9. There was some sort of validation software that I had to download for it, however.

You know, last time I donwloaded something from windows homepage, it didn´t have to check if I had genuine windows. So why now?

And that validation software will say that "Your copy of windows isn´t valid blah blah".

How did I miss it?

Anyway, I downloaded it (Windows NT FTW) and am currently installing it. Let's hope it doesn't break compatibility with old games further, like DirectX 9 did.

I asked myself the same question; I assumed that I was going to get some sort of notice in Windows Update like I'm usually used to. I guess that wasn't the case or I've completely missed it a month beforehand.

Oh well...good thing I was looking at SC2's FAQ.

Since I never play new games, I have no use for this (yet).

I miss DirectX 7.

99/100 of (commercial) games that use directX will include directX in the installation, so whats the point of downloading something you don't need?

Most pirated games don't come with DirectX, since everyone knows no one here actually buys their games

Odly enough, I do buy my computer games (well, the few I play, anyway).

Now, as for various handheld games

Well, I ran the latest update, but I'm still sitting at 9.0c. Does this not work with Win2K?

(not that I really need this, my video card's not DX10 compliant)

[edit]
Never mind, I just found this.

If you click "download direct-X" you get linked to 9.0c.

And it's not even guaranteed that new games will use DX10.

...isn't DX10 Vista only?

Well, considering Vista's "popularity" as of late, you'd have to be pretty stupid to develop a DX10-only game right now.

People are working on fixing that. There's some progress already, but it's not perfect yet.

EDIT: Silly me. Here is the site for them, since completely nebulous statements are a bit unpleasant.

EDIT2: ...Looking at that site, this is probably the more useful link. Sorry.

I was wondering why it came out 9.18 instead of 10...I was under the assumption that they might have changed their minds about Vista exclusive or something when I read it.

Although it seems the previous post has one for a better build -than- 10 anyways.
