There's this weird phoenomenon going on...
My connection is slow as SHIT. So much so, that I can't even connect to IRC, let alone load webpages. We have no modems in our house, whatsoever. Everyone's internet signal comes from a router, which we plug our broadband (cable tv) cable into, which comes from outside. When I shut off the router for a while, and then turn it back on, my connection is great. However, after a while, the connection degrades to slow-as-shit. Another thing that might factor in is that my brother is doing something that is causing constant internet activity. I don't know if it's Vanguard, a torrent, or a virus, but I'm thinking his constant internet activity isn't helping much. Yet another thing is that this router is around 5 years old, so it's definately antiquated, but is it finally giving out? Also, I've noticed that for a long time now (years), even if nobody's using the connection, the receive light blinks like crazy, like the router's receiving packets all the time. Last Wednesday is when this problem started happening. Comcast upgraded our neighborhood's system thingy to fiber optics. Ever since then, my connection's been absolute shit. So... what's going on? My brother might be clogging our bandwidth, our router might be giving out, and the fiber optics might be letting those stray packets clog our bandwidth too. Or maybe something different's happening? Either way, on Tuesday, a tech is coming to our house to give us a new router, and to check our connection. ____________________ |

Is there any form of wireless connections on that router? (Someone else might be using it if so.) ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

Yeah, there's wireless, but it's really crappy. And the wireless-activity light isn't blinking at all, so nobody's leeching from it.
Another thing, my brother was running a torrent using bittorrent. One, I didn't have the port forwarding set up for it, and two, he just now turned it off. So far, the connection has lasted for 11 minutes, with a very nice SNR, when before, it'd die in 5 minutes. Maybe the torrent was it? Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Anyway, I set up the port fowarding for bittorrent: 6881-6999, both UDP and TCP. Is this the correct forwarding for bittorrent? Maybe the router was being flooded with communication on unforwarded ports? I dunno if that'd slow it down any more than if the ports were forwarded. ____________________ |

Okibi (I was chatting to him online, I was matched against his wife in the rated o tournament) said that my problem sounded like cable latency. As in, too much data is travelling across it, and my router can't handle it, and that a way to fix it is to take the coaxial out and hold the pin for 30 seconds.
It's like a buildup or something. It makes sense, actually, since when there's a lot of activity on the network, that tends to make the connection die out. Hopefully newer routers can handle this... Tuesday's when we get the upgrade. ____________________ |

It's either a.
1. Packet loss 2. The host in question doesn't answer on ping's (usually as a prevention against DDOS attacks) ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Actually, the trend is to make newer routers cheaper, stupider, and do less.
You might have to buy an old one to get any good quality. Or avoid Linksys. Even better, try using an old computer as a router--it'll kick the arse of any other 'normal' router. |

...I'll bet that would fix this: Tracing route to acmlm.no-ip.org [213.239.193.176]I can't believe I didn't think of that before. Too bad I still need wireless. ____________________ "I'm sick of it and I'm out. See you around." ~Cpu's last post here |

What kind of modem do you have? I have a really crappy RCA modem, that, among its many faults is the fact that its not properly shielded, so if it sits to close to the router, it just get slower and slower until it just disconnects. ____________________ "I'd like to confuse bok choy with cabbage." |

I had an old Linksys wireless-b gateway. Basically, it's a combination modem/router.
We've since called Comcast and had it replaced with a much newer (and actually better) model. But yeah, I can almost guarantee that my bad connection is being caused by Comcast's upgrading to fiber optics in our area. The phone techs even said this when I asked about it. Today, they said that they were on the final phases of the upgrade, and that it should be finished soon. One anomaly I can think of to check this is how my connection is fine at night, but crappy during the day. The crew doing the upgrade works during the day when most people aren't using the service (work, school, etc), but they try to have it up by 8 PM every evening. And yeah, 8 PM is around when my connection finally started stablizing again. Either way, once this upgrade is finished, everything should go back to normal. ____________________ |
