I officially learned to touch type in fourth grade when our English class included typing lessons twice a week. I've played piano since the age of four, which helped me pick it up quickly with pretty good accuracy and speed. I'm not sure what my WPM rating is now, but I used to do very well on typing tests. Before that, I remember trying to graduate from hunting and pecking sometime in third grade.

I learned to type fairly well when I was in middle school when we got our first computer. When I started taking programming classes sophomore year of high school my typing improved tremendously. I'm pretty sure that me and my mother are the only two members of my family who type with all then fingers (she used to be a legal secretary, so she's really really fast, like stenographer fast). After I got good in high school I haven't lost the touch, even though I don't type nearly as much, or with the more obscure keys that are need for programming. I always find it funny that none of the WPM/CPM testers ever test on numbers and their associated characters, because I find that's what slows down most people. Anyways, my results were

The Enchanted Typewritter Test -
Net CPM: 399
Accuracy: 98%
Gross CPM: 404

Tigers in the Wild Test -
Net WPM: 77
Accuracy: 100%
Gross WPM: 77

The Irrational Side of Managerial Decision-making Test (left-handed/dominant typing hand) -
Net WPM: 30
Accuracy: 93%
Gross WPM: 32

Not too shabby if I should say so myself. I usually type one handed with my left hand so I ran the test with that one because I didn't see a point in testing something that I already know will just be horrendously bad from never having practiced. And I guess I correct most of my mistakes before I type the next character because in the WPM test I didn't miss a single word, even though I know I had to edit 15 or so words during the test.

I started to learn to type in 7th grade but we rarely practiced that much. I still had to look at the keyboard to type.

When I got to 10th grade, I finally took a keyboarding class in the first semester and easily learned how to type without looking at the keyboard.

I learned on my own using a DOS/Windows 3.11 computer when I was about 5-6. Over time through practice I improved my typing speed, so while it takes 90 WPM to finish that stupid copying test (with 100% accuracy, I should add), I can type much faster when I am just typing my thoughts. Mainly because it is much faster to make mistakes and delete them on the fly rather than having it stop you based on the space, which is stupid.

It was when I went on IRC that I went from hunt and peck to... I don't know what type of typing I do now. I can see the keyboard on my mind and type words out to this keyboard without actually having one. I never look at my hands, for I don't really need to. I seem to be able to do it mentally--although I want to switch to DVORAK, as I hear that would allow for even faster typing.

Also, the home row is meaningless to me--I just fly my hands all over the keyboard. Plus resting them there is stupid.

Oddly, most people type with their hands hanging above the keyboard, but I rest mine on the top of the desktop with mine.

I also rest mine on the desktop, but my keyboard is very flat. With a conventional keyboard, they're usually hovering.

5th grade, everyone was required to use the typing program during our computer lab class. Those who finished got to play Troggle Trouble!

Typing was a pain in the ass before then. I used 2 fingers to type a measly 25-40wpm. Now I average 100.

did they make you put those black rubber covers over the keyboard so you couldn't see the keys?

I still remember the cries of agony of my fellow classmates on that day.

Yes! They did! I hated it!

My typing class was low budget, they just had us take sheets of paper from the printer to cover our hands, and usually not even that. The teacher just trusted us not to look, so a lot of people did (including me after a while; I still look).

I learned sometime in elementary school, but I didn't get all that good at it until 7th grade, when the whole class took another course in it. I just took the test, and it said my net WPM was only 48. I thought for sure it would have been higher. Still, I do tend to type a lot faster when I'm not actually thinking about it, especially when I don't have exact words to copy.

Luckily, I never had to take a keyboarding class. The only keyboarding lessons I had in school were a couple of times in third grade where we went down to the library and spent half an hour with some typing program.

My high school offers a keyboarding class, but I've never taken it.

I thought myself to type 'round age 8. By 10 I was hunting at high speed and by 11 I kicked everybody's ass on Mario Teaches Typing.

Now I type two hands blind and frighten Richard.
