Well by age 4 I wrote bat files of simple menu systems so I don't have to do that!

Nothing like good ol' GETLETR.COM.

I was 15 before I learned how to type properly, it was for a class in school. Before that, I was fairly good at typing with ony two fingers.

I'm a horrible typer though. I make at least one typo every three words sometimes, and I have to look at the keys. I think it's a function of my legendary clumsiness.

I peck, but I wouldn't call it hunt and peck, I pretty much have all the keys positions memorized by now. I got a 49 net WPM, 55 gross, on the test thingy, but I always backspaced to fix my mistakes, wasting a lot of time. If I didn't bother to fix the mistakes, I'd probably have gotten a bit faster. I always am fanatical about mistakes on typing test things, I have no clue why, everywhere else I just type and fix the mistakes as I reread to make sure it makes sense.

I one-handed it at 30WPM until the eighth grade and have been punching at one since I was about 7 or so with an old 286 (you know, the old blocks with the turbo button?).

I'm pushing around 80 two-handed now. A shame I'm not any better.

After some attempts, I got 107WPM at 100% accuracy and 110/112WPM at 98% on that test.

I remember doing hunting and pecking at my first attempts at using the computer, when I was three years old (QBASIC ), and still do it for the Cyrillic keyboard layout today... for the Latin one, I never formally learned the 10-finger system, but I recall not needing to look at the keyboard anymore by the time I was in the fifth grade. Today, I do use all of my fingers, but in a manner that, from what I gathered, is not always consistent with the 10-finger system. Lately, I also seem to have developed the habit to keep the thumb of my left hand constantly on the pad below the space key when typing letters, only using it for the space key when my right-hand thumb is occupied with, for instance, pressing AltGr or .:,;-_.

5th grade, everyone was required to use the typing program during our computer lab class. Those who finished got to play Troggle Trouble!

Typing was a pain in the ass before then. I used 2 fingers to type a measly 25-40wpm. Now I average 100.

I type using two fingers at around 80 WPM usually. I can't use the ten finger system, my hands are too big.

Well...I did write BATCH menus but it wasn't at age 4. :\

I have made a high school panic on a computer by setting the AUTOEXEC to an echoing infinite loop, thereby not allowing Windows 98 to load...unless you were brilliant enough to know what the term 'break' meant (which they didn't). I bet you I could've made them reformat the system if they were just a little less smarter and didn't figure it out (some techie guy did, not the school).

Not like I was caught or anything.

I mostly played with Automenu's menu system, before deleting it entirely in my dumbass-method of installing Windows 3.1 (protip: do not copy all 7 disks to your hard drive's root)

Past that, typing was mostly done either during my early years or during 6th grade, where typing was a required class... we had to type out lines from a book twice in a row, and print them, but on those crappy macintoshes I just did it once and cut/pasted

I remember being able to type well before that, though, so...

Also, I refuse to do online WPM tests. Mostly because they force you to "copy exactly" information, and it automatically costs you some overhead in figuring out where you are with it. It's a lot easier, and faster, tos imply type what you want, although I tend to make mistakes, too

did they make you put those black rubber covers over the keyboard so you couldn't see the keys?

I still remember the cries of agony of my fellow classmates on that day.

We had pieces of paper taped to the top of keyboards, but considering the teacher was too busy making crosswords for us to do instead of typing, anyone who actually used them was a joke

I just took it off because I didn't like having something above (and on) my hands like that. Grrghbh.

I started to learn to type after I got my first computer in grade 6. At first I only used one finger from each hand and it took forever.

Learned to type in 7th grade. Didn't really apply the methods there until I joined the board. Now it just comes naturally.

Don't know how many words a minute, but when I have to copy something I tend to type less. When I just have to type freely like I am right now its a lot easier for me to rack up WPM quick.

Oh I can probably type over 100 WPM if I'm not thinking about it and I'm going off my thoughts alone but I agree...those tests do tend to be off by about 10 or 20 WPM if not more.

I know this because I've taken a look briefly at how fast I type...heck I'm sorta doing it with peripheral vision right now...peripheral.

Hmm, in elementary school we had a computer lab that we got to use twice a week. One day we would use a very silly typing program that tried showing us how to type using more than one or two fingers, and the other day we would play the Oregon Trail game.
So I'd say that's when I first learned... I got better as time went on, and in 9th grade when I took a computer class I mastered typing properly without looking.

I've never actually played that game, and from the look of it, I wouldn't want to...

I thought myself to type 'round age 8. By 10 I was hunting at high speed and by 11 I kicked everybody's ass on Mario Teaches Typing.

Now I type two hands blind and frighten Richard.

Age 2. Self taught. XD I don't remember what I was like when I was still learning though, and since then my typing's never really changed so far as I can tell.
My typing's nothing special though. Only around 60-80 WPM - it usually takes me even longer to figure out precisely what words I want to use anyways, so I never really need to type faster. I was comfortable working with DOS prompts and text and stuff, but nothing special. Never got into batch files.
My accuracy is kinda poor, but I always know instantly whenever I make a mistake, so I can fix it without even looking at what I'm typing, screen or keyboard.
I don't quite follow the correct method of typing, I have a few unique typing habits. I don't always hit the same key with the same fingers, it depends on context. My index fingers and pinkies tend to handle the lower rows and my middle two fingers tend to handle the upper rows. You'd think that I'd use that to prevent having to use the same finger twice in a row, but I actually frequently use my index fingers twice in a row. For Kejardon I type both the r and the d with my left index finger. My reasoning is that it's more natural to bend the index finger that far instead of the middle finger, which is currently on the e with how I bend my hand to type my name.
That's about it. Grew up on Qwerty, never tried changing to Dvorak.

Damn straight. Forgot that part. Somebody noticing I make a typo is a rarity. Let alone know what the typo was.
