I started thinking about typing for no real reason, then began wondering when different people stopped using the hunt-and-peck method and started using the standard typing method. Unless you haven't learned it yet...

I probably started typing the "correct" way when I was about nine. We had some generic "learn to type" program that I used.

So how about you? When and how did you learn to type?

I one-handed it at 30WPM until the eighth grade and have been punching at one since I was about 7 or so with an old 286 (you know, the old blocks with the turbo button?).

I'm pushing around 80 two-handed now. A shame I'm not any better.

I just sorta let my hands go whereever, usally using my pointer and middle on my left hand, and my pointer and thumb on my other hand, but I sometime use all of my fingers.

I got 53 WPM first time taking that test Hiryuu linked.

I was taught how to type the right way in like fourth grade though. I just don't.

using backspace.

you can't backspace a word after you hit space; which is really fucking lame, most of the time I don't realize I made an error until after I finish the word, and I'll either ctrl-left arrow and delete and re-type or fix it up, but yeah. I haven't taken a test like that in years.

I'm sitting around 90 WPM right now, although it is fairly late and night, and I'm a bit out of it. I hate those damned tests, and I couldn't accept my mediocre score from the Zebra Test, because I CANNOT type the word horse without far too much effort than any being should have. I alway try and type out "hourse," but that isn't exactly a word.

Wow, I can't even type right now. Damnit.

Anyways... I learned to type... Technically I started when I was in 1st or 2nd grade, with Mario Teaches Typing. My skills came when I started playing Nightmist, a MUD. (Multi-User-Dungeon) game. All text-based and whatnot...

I've actually gotten WORSE since 6th grade or so... I guess I don't spend enough time on message boards, or something. I sound a lot more intelligent when I type, but my WPM in typing seems to have dropped by around 5.. What the hell?

The first time, school, around 6th grade.

Then I forgot about it mostly, and always had to watch the keyboard to see what I'm doing.

Much later, I started playing a few online games, and didn't have the time to stand around talking while I'm being stabbed/shot at/exploded, so I had to learn to type fast.

On the last test I took, I came to 89 words per minute, one error (which came to something like 99% accuracy) after backspacing to fix the ones I noticed. I don't even have to see my mistakes usually, I just feel when I fuck things up. I can look out the window at the idiots goofing off in the road while typing and correct my mistakes usually.
