Little samson (NES), an awesome game that only needs dialogue in the scenes and some more rpg stuff.

Madou monogatari and puyo puyo series... carbuncle is awesome.

Solstice (NES), an almost unknown game where you have to explore a HUGE dungeon.

I always felt like Transport Tycoon is underated.

Or rather, not as known as it should be. :/

Oh yeah, The Incredible Machine rocks. I remember playing some demo as kid, and recently went and downloaded it as abondenware. It rocks.

I'd agree, but more and more Puyo Puyo is starting to get known state-side.

Though, I've never had a chance to play Puyo Puyo~n and past the Madou Monogatari game on the SFC I haven't played any others. Looks awesome.

I would say Splatterhouse Parts 1 and 2.

What can be better than the main hero possessing strength and life from a hell mask and busting the skulls of demonic zombies and apparitions to save your girlfriend?

I own the japanese import of the second game and I will tell you it is much better than the western release. 1. Rick's mask looks a lot more bad ass than some stupid skull. 2. The wording for the story as well as the level introductions are better worded and are in english. I have no idea why when it was brought to the west that they changed the wording to the intro. Why did they even bother to? It was english and not even mispronounces. Even better worded than the simplified western release.

I didn't like SH3 though. Cool graphics, but I didn't feel the same with it.

Knuckles Chaotix for Sega 32X. I still enjoy that game today, on both hardware and emulator.

Sure, it was a cool game, but the only problem with it was the Combi-Ring

That's one game I wish Sega would make a sequel for on the DS...

Any 2D Zelda game because OOT hogs all the attention.

Seriously, I really enjoyed an old DOS game called Kroz. It's all text-mode (CP437, not ASCII) graphics, the enemies are like letters with umlauts and such. Basically you're this guy (really a smiley face symbol) trying to collect treasure underground and have to avoid enemoes and walls and get keys to go to the next level.

-Seriously, why hasn't Midway released this onto consoles yet!? They would make millions more with this gem and from my current understanding, they aren't doing to good at reaping profits. This game is so gorey, it makes Resident Evil look like a game full of sad-faced puppies. Maybe alot of people were too scared to play it or the timing of it's release wasn't so great since it came out roughly after the Columbine shootings.

I love this game! My friend and I used to go to the local arcade and play this until we beat it. And one time, an employee that worked there...realized what we were doing, so he gave us infinite credits. It was awesome!

I agree here... Chaotix gets a bad reputation because the 32X was such a failure, but it's really a very good game.

Anybody heard of this one game, I forget what it's called exactly. It's like Half-Death? Half-Lyfe? Something like that. It was pretty cool.

Not sure how underrated this is, but I certainly have not heard any discussions about it greatness.. Okami for PS2. Its a s good as any Zelda game (including OOT) and with an incredibly unique and awesome graphic style.

I also think Perfect Dark (N64) never got a fair trial. Everyone and their mom's always cite Goldeneye as the King of all 90's console shooters. Perfect Dark improves on every single facet of Goldeneye, crams everything including the kitchen sink into that fat cartridge and then gets brushed aside as Goldeneye marches forward towards the game Hall of fame.

On a unrelated note, I absolutely LOVE this new big clear font. I can now read!

One game that is pretty well-known, but I think is often underrated is Phantasy Star III for the Sega Genesis... the game gets a lot of criticism for not having the same futuristic setting of its predecessors, but I thought the way the story explained it was very well-done, and to me the setting wasn't too different than Phantasy Star IV in that sense. The tech is still there, just below the surface. Of course, the general flaws of the battle system are still there, but it's not that much worse than Phantasy Star II. One criticism that is true is the music, though- most of it is terrible compared to PSII and PSIV.

Ultima Underworld.

Though the Ultima series in general is hardly underrated by any means.. the two Underworld games are kind of forgotten by most people who were around when it was made, or even unheard of altogether.. Which sucks, because UW is one incredible game for its time.. (Hell it is even pretty amazing now.)

I'd say Underworld is one of my favorite games ever, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Main ones I can think of right now are E.V.O (on the Super NES), which was very fun even though I never hear much about it, Space Station Silicon Valley (N64; unfortunately has some frustrating parts, but very cool on the whole), and the much more recent Cubivore (GCN).

For those who don't recognize the titles:
E.V.O: Sidescrolling level-based game where you kill stuff to evolve, grow a horn, etc. When you finish a world, you get moved forward where you change into the next stage of evolution, such as from fish to amphibian. Very nifty game with some RPG elements.

Space Station Silicon Valley: So there's this space station. Filled with robot animals. And it's flying straight towards Earth (OH NOES!). You play as a robot's control chip, and you take over the various animals to accomplish various goals in each level.

Cubivore: Another game where you kill stuff in order to evolve. Gamecube this time, though, even though the game uses like... 30 polygons a level. Very distinctively styled. Each creature has a color or colors; eating different colors changes your form. Main problem with the game is that it's absurdly rare, hence why so few people have heard of it.

I also have to throw a vote in for Incredible Machine (and its spinoff, Sid & Al's Incredible Toons), Chaotix, and Puggsy. All have a place in various fond memories of my childhood.

I agree that Goonies II is fuckwin and Deadly Towers is a far cry from the worst game ever. It owned me more times than I can count, but it has a charm that kept me coming back for more.

My all-time favorite underrated game is...

The Addams Family (SNES) - A platform adventure game that is way too much fun to get lost in. The game is well-programmed and player-friendly. There are plenty of 1-Ups and no instant deaths, and it pretty much rewards you for goofing around. Its map is detailed and expansive, with 150-odd rooms and many secret nooks and crannies holding everything from a few extra points to a crapload of 1-Ups. This was one of my favorites to fire up and play aimlessly.

The snes addams family was awesome. That game was huge... I can't say I've beaten it at 100%, it has a lot of secrets....

I was a bad enough dude to rescue the president map the mansion layout. I actually found all but three rooms on my own. I learned of the existence of the remaining three by opening the ROM in a hex editor and looking at the list of room names, but I didn't have the patience to find the entrances myself. Praised be the internets for giving me a hand.
