I drink diet pop by the metric fuckload. (Current favorite flavor - diet black cherry Pepsi.) I switched almost ten years ago when I wanted to lose some weight and needed to break my addiction to regular pop, which was giving me about 500 extra calories per day. I used to hate diet, but I got used to it, and now I prefer it. Regular pop tastes syrupy and gross, and I wouldn't want to switch back anyway because the taste isn't worth all the extra calories. When I treat myself, I'm going to eat or drink something I'll truly enjoy. (Like good beer. Mmm, beer.)

Much of the scary rumors about aspartame are horse hockey. I know of no credible scientific research that indicates a causal link between aspartame and cancer, multiple sclerosis, butt rot, or any of the laundry list of ailments blamed on the sweetener. Aspartame is harmful for those with PKU. (You would know if you had this because you'd have been raised on a highly restrictive diet). And if you suspect that it is triggering migraines or whatnot, it can't hurt to cut it out of your diet and see if that helps. If you aren't sensitive to it, it's basically inert.

Well to me Vanilla Coke is just as bad as Diet Coke... I mean you get this sweet Cola taste getting raped by a flavour of vanilla. :o But I guess there's not accounting for tastes.

Seriously, I can't tell.

Sugar-filled with rum, because I need it to mask the taste.

Sometimes I'll drink diet if I'm just looking for some caffeine, which is almost never. (Usually only when I'm writing a paper, or when I'm falling asleep at a party; I used to be addicted to caffeine and after dealing with some withdrawal migraines I'm now trying real hard to stay off it again.)

Why are so many programmers and engineers caffeine addicts? I don't get it. Is is just part of the subculture? It doesn't really make sense to me.

What I don't get is why the big brands like to make ad's going "Diet 'whatever'... Same great taste!".

Bullshit.

I really don't care what's in the soda. I just hate diet with a passion. It's really nasty with way too much carbonation (probably because there aren't even that many additives in it ) and has practically no taste. I agree some soda may be too sweet (like Mellow Yellow even though that's one of my favorites) but I would rather be able to taste a delicious drink than just down something with no taste just because it's low on calories.

Now I think on it...

Regular coke gives me a heartburn more easily, and seems to be more sour... which I belive is for mixing down more sugar or something, while that's not needed with diet coke.

I still drink diet-coke now and then, just not often.
