Man that was tough...I don't think I've had quite a hard time beating an RPG in a while like this one and I'm still not really done with it yet if you count the post story. Worse, it seems you can keep playing the darn thing through again and again and each time it gets that much harder (up to 50 times harder).

It doesn't help that the whole game top to bottom is intentionally kickass. That's no good for me since it screams 'time suck'. Damn...

Anyways, anyone else play this or do I have to strongly suggest that you do?

Played it, beaten it/been raped by it.

Great game, one of my favorites and probably one of the best in the last few years.

It kept me playing it, I almost felt like beating it in one sitting (I have to sleep though.)

The only thing that bugs me is how the einherjar had no real story this time around.

I should probably pick this up. Haven't played a good RPG in a long time.

I think a lot of those that were caught up in the backstories of the original Valkyrie Profile were let down by that point. There was something but a lot of it relied on old knowledge of the original...which I've yet to play because I can't find a damned PSX copy and refuse to pay for a PSP until they go down some (I'm cheap and paying back a 900-dollar clutch).

If this is for the PS2, I'll probably never play it

Then again, the comments here make it sound like another level grinding hell hole, so I'd probably avoid it even if I had the chance :/

The game has a certain skill aspect to it and the only point in level grinding early is for two obscenely powerful items.

Post game, things get a lot harder, so grinding is sort of needed.

To pass it up if you own a PS2 and you like RPGs is probably a bad idea.

There is a lot to the story, but most of it can't be talked about because of all the spoilers. Some things I saw coming, some things I didn't. The ending seemed to go a little... crazy, but god I loved it because I played the original.

Also, Lezard is awesome.

I have no skill, no PS2, and I hate RPGs.

Yeah, I'm out.

Same here

Loved Valkyrie Profile 1, still didn't achieve the A ending yet.
And it is good you can skip the Soul Crush scenes in VP2; in VP1 you'll have to watch zillions of Nibelung Valestis (yes, you don't need to use the PWS attacks, but the tougher bosses - as in the Seraphic Gate - require this).

But on the other hand it is fun to whoop Iseria's ass with four Angel Slayers

You know, I've been looking to get a PSP for that reason alone?

Well, not that reason -alone- but I have been looking to buy. It's a shame it'd cost me over 200 dollars.

ACH!

So I'm going through the Seraphic Gate. The bosses are harder than hell to kill as it is. Finally succeed in defeating Wotan and get through to the third floor. I'm doing fine until I get to a Sunspot Visitor. Now, he's really nothing and he's slow as fuck but has a lot of HP. So I'm wailing on him, right? All of a sudden he does something I totally don't expect.

'Astral Maze' hey what's tha--OMG MY FUCKING CHARACTERS ARE GONE WHAT THE [tosses controller game aver]---fuck.

God damn I'm glad I saved before that. Insta-kills at this stage of the game aren't funny.

This game continues to get more and more ridiculous in the post-game.

I finally got all the way up to the Ethereal Queen. Trust me that I busted my ass to get there.

Hacked away at her for a good forty minutes, with her -blocking- most of my attacks and I only managed to pull out a quarter of her HP. Then she wails on my ass, killing my healer (Alicia) with a lucky explosion that didn't get healed correctly (I have auto-regen on attack) that did well over 24000 damage and then she proceeds to use the lovely Astral Maze on my ass when my 'guarding' person for Astral Maze is dead. Game over even after a forty minute struggle. At the rate I was going, I could've gone against her for nearly three hours and she could've pulled something like that on me and I would've been infinitely pissed.

Just to say the least...I'm leveling a bit more...level 78 is apparently not enough.

Is playing the first Valkyrie profile a necessity to play this one? Is it a sequel or just a continuation of the same general idea? (ex. Final Fantasy)

It's a continutation but in a weird sense. Actually, it's a prequel. It's not necessary to play the original in order to get the game. I didn't play the first. However, as what I'm told, there are a LOT of references from the first game the tie into the second.

All I know is that I've already seen a vast variety of these characters in Radiata Stories. Ethereal Queen was the final side-boss in that game as well.

Actually that is a reference to older Enix (yes, not Square-Enix) games yet.
Example is the Seraphic Gate music. In Star Ocean 2 that extra dungeon appeared first (or was it already in Star Ocean J for SNES, with that name?), the music in VP1 is a kind of remix, actually the same tune with slightly changed instruments - though I like the SO2 version more than that in VP1.

Also Iseria-chan made her appearance in SO2; but with about six million hitpoints on Universe difficulty (and you know the deal - the battles are hard and no cakewalks like in most FFs; and a maximum of 9999 per hit only - so it WILL take a while to punch her lights out; I am even not strong enough to reach the final floor yet ), she reappeared in VP1, and as Hiryuu stated, in Radiata Stories or even in Star Ocean 3.

Speaking of SO3, Iseria isn't the last boss...Dirna Hamilton is.

She's the person guarding it to get in and to get a Seraphic Gate clear. It then gets progressively harder. On the 10th playthrough of the Seraphic Gate, the HP is multiplied about 6 times (she'd have about 6 million HP, which would be similar to what Surlent described as Universe difficulty). If you play through the -enitre- game 50 times and Seraphic Gate 10 times it is multipled and incredible -80- times...not to mention ALL OTHER STATS AS WELL.

Ridiculous.

Valkyrie Profile 2 is a sequel to Valkyrie Profile.
Spoilers for VP1 and 2

Spoiler:
Towards the end of the game you meet up with Lenneth, that is the Lenneth from Valkyrie Profile 1 and that is the Lezard from Valkyrie Profile 1. Although Valkyrie Profile 1 takes place after 2, because of time travel it is a sequel.

Just got the game yesterday, obliterated the first boss with a 55 hit combo. Nearly got killed by that dragon thing, but Lezard kept being just barely out of the blast radius. Stopped a little after I got out of the ruins on that mountain, on the way to Villmore I think.

I think the most I've maxed out on so far is 189 hits (and I died, so it's not there). That happened off of 3 break modes in a single attack.

That's not to say you can't max out at 999 hits in the game either. Rufus is more than capable of it with large enemies knocked down.

Oh...and the game gets -much- harder. Clear time for Chapter 3 is the worst.

51 minutes, 48 seconds.

That's how long it took in battle to kill Iseria.

And damn did I get so close to biting the dust more than once. At least I can say I did it on my second try.
