So, the computer's been acting all wonky lately, grinding louder than usual and shutting off randomly. I notice the computer's a little warm, so I d/l a program to check the PC temperature.
It's 159 degrees Fahrenheit. So, I go in with my minivac to clean out the computer. I open it up and HOLY SHIT THE DUST IS CAKED ON! Gee, I wonder *why* it was running like shit. Could it possibly have _anything_ to do with the fact that there's a thick dust bunny the size of my HAND on the motherboard? (honest to god, I was COUGHING when I first started cleaning it out and there's still a layer of dust on the computer desk.) (Now, the PC temp's back down to 103, and shockingly, working better.) |

...That's around the area of common sense.
I will say that you fail if you actually used a vacuum cleaner to do the job. Ever heard of electricity? Static electricity? You think that does well against such machinery as a computer and a hard drive? It does not. Then again, most people are afraid as hell to open their systems to clean them...probably like most people are afraid to even open the hood of their car to see if they need oil or not. I've seen 286es that were never opened until twenty years later. That is a complete nightmare. For the record, I'm currently at 31-34C (or ~87-93F) and am not using anything to liquid cool it...otherwise it'd probably run a bit better. |

My computer's hard drive is usually open. All I see in the way of dirtiness is some lint on some part of it. I'm surprised your comp was really that hot. :o ____________________ ._. + internet |

Or you could just get a can of compressed air. |

Posted by TrapsterPosted by Ranko Yeah, the one I used was an Oreck Canister Vac. Not powerful enough to screw up anything, and it's working fine now. |

I just used the compressor at my mom's house, when I needed to do it.
I should really look and see how to pop this laptop open, since it could really use a good cleaning. ____________________ I dealt with it. |

I use a combination of a vacuum cleaner and compressed air. I use compressed air to dislodge the dust and use the vaccum cleaner--hovering over where I'm cleaning-- to suck up the dust. My entire family has asthma and it is bad for us to breathe in concentrated airborne dust. |

Posted by TrapsterPosted by Craig341 It looks like it's US-only; I assume just about any small canister vacuum would work just as well, as long as it has both a vacuum and a blower. |

Posted by Trapster No, it's an Oreck vac. site here. And it's not exactly "small"; it's about a foot long by a half-foot wide and tall. |

My iMac usually runs around 30ºc or 40ºc. Being the first generation of Intel Macs, its Yonah Core Duo CPU is a laptop variant in truth. It's very cool and very quiet.
Chad on the other hand has one of the last iMacs with a G5 in it. Her CPU pushes 80ºc regularly, and when playing WoW in the summer the cooling fans go like the clappers. My old Athlon, that's still sitting solemnly in my parent's house in my bedroom, was about as loud as desktops came. When I opened that last, I had to blast away the insides with the vacuum cleaner. It didn't make it any quieter though |

You have not seen complete and utter filth until you have worked on a computer whose owner has 20+ cats.
No, I am totally not kidding. And I am not going into further detail. ____________________ [citation needed] |

I'm afraid I have you all beat. My computers become as clean as the day each of their components were manufactured.
I use an air compressor, you see. Not the kind that comes in a 18-oz can. The kind that you use to put air in your car's tires. Yeah. THAT kind. Stick a little trigger nozzle on the end of the hose and summon forth the PSIs. The cooling fans spin faster on cleaning day than they ever could with the computer in operation. |
